Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is Kat, and I will be helping you get your computer fixed back up and on the go! You should either print these instructions, or save them to your desktop for easy access. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, and you will be unable to access the internet at that time.

The first thing you need to do is to disable WinPatrol until we have you cleaned back up. Leaving it running will cause parts of the fix to not work properly.

~Downloads~

1. Download CleanUpInstall the program, dont run it yet, we will use it later.
2. Place a shortcut to Active Scan on your desktop for later use.
3. Download AboutBuster .
4. Download CWShredder .

~Update~

1. Update About:Buster

• Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
• Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
• Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
• Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
• If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
• Now close About:Buster

2. Update CWShredder

• Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
• Click Check For Update
• Close CWShredder

~Instructions~
1. Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

2. Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:

• Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
• Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
• It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
• When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
• Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

3. Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

4. Now run CleanUp!

5. Please open HijackThis and click the "Do a system scan only" button. When it has produced the log, please place a check next to ONLY the following entries:

6. Now, please be sure that ALL other windows, programs, etc are closed other than HijackThis, and click the "Fix Checked" button.

7. Be sure you can View Hidden Files and folders by doing the following:

• Click Start
• Double click on “My Computer”
• Select Tools menu, and click on Folder Options..then click the View tab
• Under Hidden Files and Folders heading, select “Show hidden files and folders”
• uncheck the “hide protected operating systems files” options.
• Click “yes” to confirm, then click “ok”

8. Go to Start>Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs. Uninstall the following:
SOAPNET

9. Remove the following folder:
C:\Program Files\SOAPNET

10. Reboot normally

11. Connect to the internet, and click on the Active Scan icon on your desktop. Run a full scan, and save the report it gives you to a Notepad file on your desktop.

12. Re-hide your hidden files and folders:

• Click Start
• Double click on “My Computer”
• Select Tools menu, and click on Folder Options..then click the View tab
• Under Hidden Files and Folders heading, unselect “Show hidden files and folders”
• check the “hide protected operating systems files” options.
• Click “yes” to confirm, then click “ok”

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:

[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:

• SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

• A More Secure Browser
  Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
  There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Hello again! There are a couple of optional entries in your HijackThis log that show they begin on startup of the pc, and are not necessary to run at startup. Fixing them in HJT will NOT remove the programs/applications themselves, it will simply keep them from starting up as the computer boots and/or running continually in the background. Both of these are "resource hogs" and can bog down your system. They will launch themselves when needed still. Open HJT and scan for a log, then place a checkmark next to the following two entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StorageGuard] "C:\Program Files\VERITAS Software\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
Make sure all other windows are closed, and click the "Fix Checked" button. Then reboot the computer.

Well, you have a pretty stubborn strain of sp.html infection. Looks like the bugger didn't want to die. Let's wipe it out, shall we?


1. Download SpSeHjfix here
Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

2. Reboot into Safe Mode.

3. Open CWShredder and run it again. Click "I agree" then "Fix" and let it do its' thing.

4. Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:[/b]

• Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
• Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
• It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
• When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
• Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

5. Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

6. Run the CleanUp! program again.

7. Reboot the computer normally and connect to the internet. Go to Active Scan and do a full system scan and SAVE the log for me.

Double click on delfiles.bat on your desktop. A black DOS type window will open and some text will flash by quickly. When it is done, simply exit the window. This will kill off all those nasty files left behind by ActiveScan.


Your HijackTHis log is clean. One more thing I'd like to check for you though, to be SURE you're clean. Several of those entries found by ActiveScan show several nasty Adware/Spware related programs. I'd like to see an installed programs list to be sure if there are any we need to remove or not!

Please open HijackThis and click the "Open Misc Tools Section". Next to the "Generate StartupList" button, please check both boxes (List also minor sections and List empty sections) and then click the "Generate Startup List" button. Copy all the contents of the Notepad page that opens up, and paste it here to me.

I cannot get that to work...nothing flashes by abox pops up warning me about what I am about to do, the it asks me if i want to use a web program to determine how to open it or browse...if I use the web program it asks this for everythin, but stops at the gator plug in and will not go any further

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

• Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.
• Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.
• Select "Delete on Reboot".
• Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
