First off sorry if this is posted in wrong forum, as im just looking for help as im not the smartest computer person in the world.

Ok so i have several problems with my laptop.

first off is my firewall i have windows SP2 installed, but when i click to open my firewall i get this message appear and cannot open it.

'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service.'

when pressing No nothing happens.

When pressing Yes i get the following message appear.
'Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service.'

Ok next problem is when i want to manage my add-ons some programs say that only the administrator can disable or enable certain programs, yet this is my laptop so i must be the administrator.

Next problem is on start up my documents folder keeps opening. how do i stop this

ok thats it for now.........
i hope someone can help me with this. as they are probally pretty simple to solve.
thanks duncan

For Windows Firewall:
Start -> Run.
Type: services.msc.
Press <enter>.
Check if the StartupType of Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service is Manual. If not, double click on it, to open its properties dialog, in the StartupType drop-down menu select Manual.

For My documents Problem:
Start -> Run.
Type: msconfig.
Press <enter>
Click on Startup Tab.
Check for any enabled entries with My Documents.

Go back to services.msc as suggested before, check if the StartupType of Windows Management Instrumentation Service and the Network Connections service is Automatic.

Can u also post a HijackThis Log.

U have a malware infection.
Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Hi dwdo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download and install AD-Aware se.
Click Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first. Don't run yet.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

Download Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate. Don't run yet

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan. Save the scan.log and post the log.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an check in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.new-access.biz
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/

Hi dwdo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fExERRfqi] fltenh(3).exe
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
fltenh(3).exeExit Explorer.Reboot as normal.

Reboot system as normal

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
