Hello. Win Fixer 2005 has found its way onto my computer and you know everything that comes along with that. Norton also comes on every 5 minutes with a pop-up of some other adware thats on my computer. I Followed all the instructions on your site before doing a HiJackThis report, but nothing is getting rid of this adware and WinFixer. Webpages close by themselves, and any program you run shows "Not Responding" in a matter of minutes.

Hi Jean,

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.


2. Remove Infections

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

My Web Search
AWS
WeatherBug


Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\WINDOWS\etb

C:\Program Files\CasStub

C:\WINDOWS\System32\qzldbbqy.exe

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch. It will open the folder Prefetch. Delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!


Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.


Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Ok I followed all the steps you wrote. Except these things happened:

1.I went to my add/remove programs to delete MyWebSearch and a box popped up that said "Error loading C:\Progra~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\3.bin\mwsbar.dll
The specified module could not be found"
2.The files "qzldbby.exe" and "UWFX5LP_0001_0803NetInstaller.exe" were not there when I went into Windows Explorer, so I couldnt delete them.
3.When I ran Ewido before I followed all the steps, I had 3 infected files, when I ran it now after everything's supposed to be fixed I have 7.
4.Win Fixer 2005 is still on my computer.
5.Norton keeps popping up telling me I have a pcs_0026.exe virus.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Ok i did that, and the screen popped up and said 1 file copied. Then it went away and my icons disappeared. But after about 30 min the screen was just sitting there blank, and you didnt mention it would take a long time, so I thought it froze and restarted it. When that screen popped up again this time it said 0 files copied and file could not be found. Then went back to my regular screen minus the icons. I am on another computer now. What do I do? Leave it alone or restart it regularly? If so, how do I get that program to stop and make the computer normal? I'm confused. Sorry.

This seems to be some mutation of the infection which is upsetting the tool.

However I have the fix for it.


Reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up and then choose the option - Safe Mode).


Run Hijack This and click on scan. One of the items your are likely to see is -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [second] C:\***************\l2mfix\second.bat

The entry will start with O4 and the file name (irrespective of path name) is second.bat.

Check the box next to it and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.


Run l2mfix and choose Option #1. Post the log here.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "Delete on Reboot".

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..


8) Double click on fix.reg and let it merge with your registry.


Let the system reboot.

Ok I did that. Now what? Do you need to see any log files? I'm not sure if everything is back to normal or not. Oh and FYI- my computer is still rebooting on that l2mfix #2 mode. I have to hurry up and "x" out the green box when it pops up, or else all the icons will go away and the screen will be blank again. How do I stop that? Delete l2mfix.exe?

My computer upon rebooting is still starting up in the l2mfix #2 mode, where all the icons disappear. The only way I can get my icons to show up is if I exit out the green box very quickly. Would deleting l2mfix make my icons appear normally?How do I make it start up normally?

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

That will fix your immediate problem.
