After Geeks To Go rid my machine of malware, I tried to reinstall my previously purchased Norton SystemWorks 2005 GoBack. GoBack reported that there wasn't enouigh room for installation, and suggested defragmenting my drives. The defragment program, DisKeeper, didn't change anything after running. Diskeeper seems to be running normally, no error messages, just doesn't change anything! I have to admit I may have removed something prematurely in an attempt to clean my desktop. I know HJT is gone! Is there any help for this?
Peace be with you

Diskeeper doesn't give you more space, it simply 're-arranges' the files on the disk so that all the available free space is in one lump instead of being in pieces all over the place. this allows the hard disk to read/write more efficiently and more quickly. After running Diskeeper you should see very little red in the graphical reperesentation of the disk. The red represents the fragmented files -- less red means less fragmentation. If Diskeeper gets rid of the red then it's working fine. To make more room you need to uninstall programs you don't use and put any large files of your own on to cd or dvd.

Yes, thank you. Actually, I didn't phrase my question properly. Diskeeper just doesn't seem to be working. After defragging, everything seems to stay the same. See the following Diskeeper report please, and tell me what you think.
Findings on C:

Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there remain 987 fragmented files and/or directories and 4357 excess fragments. (There were 4357 excess fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 0% more.)

Peace be with you

Hi Keith;
I did and it didn't. Diskeeper report follows.
Findings on C:

Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there remain 987 fragmented files and/or directories and 4357 excess fragments. (There were 4357 excess fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 0% more.)

The average number of fragments per file is 1.06.

You should schedule Diskeeper to run considerably more often than it has been running to reduce the current fragmentation and maintain a lower level of fragmentation. This volume is moderately fragmented, with 70% of the total volume space available for defragmentation.

I found HJT! Glory to GOD! Here's a log file, for what it's worth.

Peace be with you,
nbtween

Just for the record.
Norton's defragmenter worked. Since then, Diskeeper began working properly. Go figure. Anyway, the machine seems to be ok now, no ads, no viruses, A OK. GoBack installed without a hitch. Glory to GOD! Thanks Geeks to Go.
Peace be with you

nbtween- glad you got it sorted. One of the reasons I stay with Norton is the handy ability to boss XP. For the record, there is nothing wrong with the native defregmenter tool in XP. It is a "lite" version of Diskeeper. Third party defragmenters can actually fight with XP about where to put files, which gums up the whole works. XP was designed to tolerate a great deal of fragmentation. The original error of requiring more space would prompt me to follow Pip22's advice in post two:
"To make more room you need to uninstall programs you don't use and put any large files of your own on to cd or dvd."
