I really need some assistance here. I have a PC running Windows XP. It has been getting increasingly difficult to restart. For the apst few weeks, if it gets turned off it takes HOURS to restart and only restarts after multiple attempts. When I try to restart the fan comes on, the lights flicker on the front, but nothing on the monitor. The monitor is working - I alredy checked that. Any ideas? Also, if I need to purge the hard drive how can I save programs that I don't have a startup/intillation disk for? Thanks!

To check for a couple of things, click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and get a blue bar, after the bar goes, reboot.

Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

This will take an hour, it will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this.

When it gets to the desktop, the system files and the hard drive will be as they should

If there is not any improvement

Run this

http://www.theelderg..._windows_xp.htm

You need Windows Installation CD to repair the current installation, last in list, which leaves data and programmes alone.
If no improvement

Download Everest Home here

Click + next to computer then summary, click report, quick report - summary, plain text, remove your details, computer name and username etc, leave everything from motherboard down, post the report so someone can help you locate the software downloads
