Hello,

I've been struggle with the following ad:

"you're visiting illegal xxxx sites. FBI knows everything about you right now. All information is logged. Click here to protect yourself urgently before it's too late. Your IP logged. Security risk level - high. Your're beeing (sic) watched and all your acts are tracked. Your life is in danger! Click here to stop the threat (link to http://www.cleanpriv...dv=164&sub=dc1). Download free track removal.
No matter what I do, I get this warning as my wallpaper.
I also get it as a background when I open Internet Explorer (blank page). When I try to go to other sites I randomly get a banner that says that I am being watched... etc on the top of the screen. Sometimes, I cannot go anywhere. I also receive a warning each 15 min. saying: 'your computer is full of evicence. Click yes to clean your computer now.
I followed all your instructions to download, install and run antispyware and antivirus but so far nothing worked.
The computer is also slow and I am experiencing strange things like the CD/DVD drive opening randomly.
I have found 2 .exe running in task manager named 6148939ae8b.exe as well as a host of strange looking files in c:windows.

Please help!!!!

First please uninstall ewido guard - we don't want it interfering. Next, go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the service called "WindowInstallSystem". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Click here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the red 'Delete File' button after pasting:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\6148939ae8b.exe

Click 'Exit' when done.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\!Submit and you will see the file we removed - zip it up and send to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email.

Then create a new folder called C:\HijackThis, extract the HijackThis.exe file from the zip file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong and they won't clutter your desktop. Make sure that you have no other browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [6148939ae8b] C:\WINDOWS\System32\6148939ae8b.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [6148939ae8b] C:\WINDOWS\System32\6148939ae8b.exe
O23 - Service: WindowInstallSystem (6148939ae8bsvr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\6148939ae8b.exe (file missing)

Reboot, rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Hi Daemon,

Thanks for the quick reply. Before I do what you have suggested I notice I would need to remove I thought I ought to mention that I am also running Norton Internet Security, which did not pick the virus/spyware at first It only found it when I did a live update a few days later.
Now when I boot Norton finds the program 6148939ae8b.exe running and kills it apparently (though there are 2 instances shown in task manager) and my desktop is still not my own!

I though this may be pertinent to my original question. Do I need to stop/uninstall Norton?

Also when I go into services.msc I cant find a process called "windowinstallservice" I can find a "windows Installer" is this the service you mean?

I will wait for an answer before I follow your previous instructions.

Regards,
Darnmike.

Leave Norton running for now. Click here to download ServiceFilter, a little script by rand1038 that reveals potential unauthorised running services in your system. Download, unzip and double-click ServiceFilter.vbs (you may need to enable your antivirus program to run the file). This script will create a text file named Post_This.txt in the same folder as the script itself has been saved - copy and paste the contents of Post_This.txt in your next reply here.

Hi Daemon,

It seems as if it is not running anymore!!! The banner is not there now when I am browsing in IE. However, I cannot get rid of the [bleep] desktop wallpaper regardless of what background I choose. It seems as if it is lying over my desktop somehow.
Also the login is still a bit slow. Any ideas?

Regards,
Darnmike.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sjcn] C:\WINDOWS\sjcn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard spyware remover] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with another HJT log in your next reply.

Hi Daemon,

I have done as you have suggested, apart from I could not find any of the entries to check in HJT.
The desktop has now gone to a plain white one after running smitrem. However, I still cannot change the desktop background as it still has an HTML file overlaying it (The white background I presume).

Find below a new HJT log and smitfiles.txt.

Darnmike.
