Macs, LMAO. I shouldnt say that i should be impartial but i hate macs with a vengance. The only good thing was the operating system was nice and easy to use. But since they have released it for normal PCs now whats the point the intel pcs with osx out perform the most powerful mac by a significant margin and are a [bleep] of alot cheaper. Macs are dead in there current form they are even stopping making the cpus for them, in favour of more mainstream architectures.

Currently, don't purchase the 17" or 20" Imac unless they have the 2nd or 3rd generation logic board in them. I fix the things and everyone I've fixed has required multiple parts for repair.

Ahh- computer bigotry. I own both a Mac G4 running OS X and a Pentium 4 running XP Pro. Since I switched to OS X I have NEVER once had to reboot from a lockup. I wish I could say the same for my XP PC...

A lot of PC-only people will tell you how much they hate macs- people hate what they don't understand. But the fact remains that all major publishing and graphics software companies usually create new versions, plugins and updates for the Mac first, PC second. Macs just rule publishing and printing. Then there's the whole font thing- but I digress.

Get at least a G4 and run OS X, and run all native OS X apps. Other than that, I'd get a tower so you can expand with new cards, etc.

I used to be one of those "..hate what they don't understand" PC people. One day I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised at what it can do. Now we have a G3, G4, G5 and Mac mini, along with 2 XP Pro machines. The Macs are production machines and as nyspy said, all graphic software updates are released for mac first. Of all of them I like the G5 the best, but alas it is a tad spendy. OS X offers a few new things one being searchlight, which illuminates locations where what your searching for may be. I find it quite handy as a fairly new user.

I have never had to reboot either as is common with any Windows OS. That said I still find myself oddly attached to my PC. Perhaps it is the fact that I have come to rely on the way some things work on a PC, as an example, the incessant need to constantly run “performance enhancing” functions. :tazz:

i love macs - I have never, ever had a problem that was two steps away from fixing.

Personally, the old G4's pack a lot of power. The problem is that they dont sell them any more. you would have to look into used pc's which may be a plus because they will be cheaper plus upgraded - you can then get the OSX 10.4 TIGER operating system Edited - do not advise the aquisition of illicit software.

The G5's are horribly expensive, however they are supremely powerful - even with 512 ram they can run victoriously well over as many as 10 programs open at once. I worked with one for 5 months at work and i was really sad to switch back to my pc.

The iMac's are good on value. You can get them for a pretty good price. i believe a really good upgraded 17" system goes for around $2400 in total (much cheaper than the G5's which may run you $3000 at the start!!)

Therefore, i've worked on everything from the old G3's, g4, g5, imac, and even the eMac (which is pretty good as well)

My advice:
- get at least 1 GB of Ram
- don't overdo it with the harddrive - get the 80GB then add your own external one
(mac harddrives are expensive!)
- in my opinion the best deal would be on an older G4

-----
and one last tidbit... the original mac operating system that Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak developed in the late 1980's was stolen through contract loopholes by Bill Gates in the early 90's. Therefore, pretty much everything Bill Gates has developed into Window's has been highly based on Apple operating systems and programs.

Edited to remove reference to illicit software - UKBiker
