Welcome to GTG.

Please read the first link in my signature and follow the steps outlined there. You must install XP SP1a (hold off on SP2 until your computer is clean). Without SP1a, you are wide open to re-infection. When you are ready, post a new HijackThis log here.

Hi greynight17

Thanks for responding. I had previously read and carried out the steps regarding the posting of a log.

I do not have a copy of SP1a so I have installed SP2 as I was told that this includes SP1a. I hope that this is correct.

A new HijackThis log follows.

That's ok. The only reason we ask users to hold off on SP2 install and get SP1a is because SP2 can make your system very unstable if you have problems with it (like in your case). Let's see how it fairs out....

OK, I will ask you to run a lot of programs here. Just take your time on them and run them in the order I specified below. Once done, restart and give me new sets of logs for all those that were requested.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip the files to a folder on your Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update button to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run AboutBuster and click Begin Removal button. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Click Exit once you are done. Click the OK button and it should exit. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O2 - BHO: Class - {66D4E389-181B-8B2A-A745-30CF47940533} - C:\WINDOWS\atlxu.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfccl.exe] C:\WINDOWS\mfccl.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [netnl.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netnl.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winii.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winii.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe

Delete these files if found:

C:\WINDOWS\atlxu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mfccl.exe
C:\Program Files\PSGuard\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netnl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\winii.exe

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido. Also post the AboutBuster log.

Hello again greynight17

I have followed the instructions to the letter, I think.

The only thing -- I did not see a 'autoclean box' on the pandasoftware.

However, please find logs as follows:-

panda log !!!

Delete this folder:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\BOB\FAVORITES\SITES ABOUT\

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
