How do l remove W32.Desktophijack? [RESOLVED]

Hello my name is David l would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone could provide, l am getting a Norton pop up everytime l click on a function. It is named W32.Desktophijack and is located in C:\WINDOWS\System32\WINNET.dll
l have gone through the process of loading and applying all things suggested in the (start here) process. I was unable to load the Windows Update SP1a because it kept telling me that system32\winnet.dll is still open and close and start again but the same applies everytime. As l bank on the internet im reluctant to process anything until l remove this virus......My hijack this logfile is below...as suggested any assistance would be appreciated....Regards

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with another HJT log in your next reply.

I dont have hat happening anymore now thank you very much Daemon.....What could you suggest that would give me better protection against viruses and adaware please
