For the past week I have been dealing wtih overwhelming popups and you all are my last resort. Everytime I open INTERNET EXPLORER I am dealing with tons of popups. I have run many antispyware programs, but nothing is working. I am a little familiar with HIJACK THIS so here is my logfile, but go easy on me because I wouldn't say i am computer literate...help!!!

Hey I'm new to this site, but at this point you all are my last resort. I have downloaded all the antispyware that I have seen on this site and for the most part it got rid of alot of trojans and spyware, but I am continuing to get popups...most of the time they are SEARC-H, or VX123...I am pretty sure something is downloading everytime i restart my comp!

Hello Megan and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Please note that I have merged both of your threads into one. Your first thread would have been ignored by helpers since they look for zero replies to topics and you had replied into your own thread. You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please do the same to AOL Spyware Protection, for the same reason. When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of the two programmes to run in real-time. Use the other one for “on demand” scanning..

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Download Find Q.zip to your desktop

Find Q.zip

Extract the files inside to C:\ That will create a folder called Find Q , open it and run the batch file find q.bat

It must be extracted to C:\ or it might not function correctly

This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for me to see.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Just one other question the first part you mentioned about unzipping HIJACK THIS...i'm sorry but I somewhat understand, but if you could tell me the steps about how to make a new folder and then upzip it to that folder! Thank you

To make a new folder.

Go to START and right-click>EXPLORE, Windows Explorer will open. Navigate to PROGRAM FILES and left click on it to highlight it.

At the top left of the page click on FILE>NEW>FOLDER a new folder will appear in which you can typre a name. Name it HijackThis.

Now go to your folder or place containing the programme HijackThis. Right click on the icon (looks like sticks of dynamite with a fuse) choose CUT, now go back to the new folder called HijackThis, then right click on it and choose PASTE.

From now on, whenever you alter anything with HijackThis, a backup will be stored there and protected from deletion.

Hello again Megan

The log is looking a lot better, however we must delete the bad Qoologic files found and also locate the VX2 infection still on your PC.

Before we do that, a couple of things I note from your latest log. It shows me that you have Microsoft Antispyware still running in real-time. Please read my first post and disable it as described.

When you installed Ewido, you did not uncheck GUARD, so that is also running in real-time. Both of these programmes protect your registry, so any alterations we make will be reversed by them. Please disable Ewido too.

I also note that you did not move HijackThis to its own folder; don't worry, I'll be careful and remember it is in your desktop folder. Please let me know of any difficulties you have with the fixes or my instructions.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks for the quick reply...I followed your directions step by step but it is very possible I messed up a little. I keep looking at MICROSOFT ANTISPYWARE and it is telling me that it is DISABLED IN REAL TIME PROTECTION...i'm not sure what else to do. I had more problems with AOL ANTI SPYWARE because I wasn't quite sure how to disable that. Also I did uncheck both things for EWIDO but if you can tell me how to disable it that would be great. Let's see and I dont quite understand about hijack this but I do know I have a folder on my desktop that I labeled HJT that has an unzipped version of hijack this in it.

I wont' be able to do all this til after work today, but I'll send it to you ASAP...Thanks again for all your help!!

If they are both reporting being inactive, that's fine; sometimes with Ewido the running process is the updater. I'm afraid that I don't know much about the AOL programme, it's not used much in the UK.
