I have been hit with something that has not been detected by McAfee, or any of the tools that you recommend. I have run all of them. I have even tried doing a system restore. What ever it is this is the second machine on my network to start displaying this problem. I have disconnected the rest of the machines for now. The only file I can execute is IE. All of my system tray items will not load. When I try to open an exe file I get the message that Windows can not open do I want to pick the program (which does not work) or search online for the program. Please help I am totally down right now

You say none of your system tray items will load, what exactly do you mean? I see processes from ewido, mcaffee, and a number of others. How are you trying to launch the programs. Is it just the shortcuts that dont work, or are you unable to launch the program when actually navigating to it in My Computer.

When Windows starts all the items that load into the system tray just pop up the Windows can not open this file message. The only way I can run any thing is to Ctrl-Alt-Del and go to file and click on File> New Task (RUN) while holding the control key down. That is the only way I can get my DOS prompt window to open. Double Clicking on the files in My Computer returns the same Window cannot open this file message.

If those programs are running I have no idea what is starting them.

I installed them all using the above technique.

try the solution offered here:

http://sarc.com/avce...istry.keys.html

and see if that fixes the problems with running programs. Report back with either success or failure, and any problems you encountered.

Follow the steps:

1) Click Start, Run and type Command (not same cmd, cmd won't run because it is an exe; Command is a com file)
Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:
cd\windows
copy regedit.exe regedit.com (again as .exe wont work we are make a .com copy)
regedit.com

2) Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %* [with quotes]
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

3) Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile.

report back with success or failure

Done. The icons in th system tray and on the Quick Launch bar are now back and a few more of the desktop icons are back but not all of them. Also the icons on the Start Menu are still missing.

okay, what I'd like you to do is go to start, run, type cmd and hit enter

in the box that appears type sfc /scannow and wait while it scans. If it prompts you for your windows CD, put it into the CD drive.

Once you've finished that, reboot and report back on the status of your problems.

I ran the scan. It did not report anything so I am not sure if it found anything or not. I did get back a couple more icons. One of the icons I got back was my Ad Aware Watch. When I opened it it detected several registry modifications. I blocked all of them. This is how the problem began on my computer (this is my husbands I am trying to fix now because I totally screwed mine up to the point I cannot get it to boot. Anyway the problem is a little worse again in that there are several programs that try to run on start up that used to work and are now giving me the Windows cannot run the file type. I am so frustrated. I am having to rebuild my computer from scratch and do not want to have to do my husband's as well. Have you seen this problem before?

I have searched for days trying to find a solution. I stumbled across this post at the microsoft newsgroup forum. What he is explaining is exactly what happened to me. However neither of the MS replies worked. http://www.microsoft...exp=&sloc=en-us it is the post labeled *.lnk gone mad PLEASE HELP

Thanks for your help so far.
