I have been tweaking my computer rather heaverly and so I expect the layout.ini file to be small but on finding to be 7kb in size I thought this a bit too small. (there are no problems with my computer form the tweaking.) Would any one agree with this?

A few results form the tweaking that I have done to aid in any desision.

megabites in memory on boot: 108mb
C:\Windows: 535mb
C:\documents and settings: 8mb
E:\program files: 524mb
C:\pagefile.sys: 512
D:\ 508mb <== this is where I moved My Documents too.

Sure I would make mine that big if I was doing something that needed it, but since I don't I keep it small, it just depens on what you use you computer for. Games and picture and movie editing are the biggest useres of it. do not do much of this things so I don't need it big.

I was only interested in the layout.ini, I just wanted who ever answered to know what my computer was like.

Michael Buckley,
Have you rebooted your PC, after you used the command to re-create the layout.ini?

Yes I have rebooted about five times. I have looked in it before many times and I can see things that are things missing. I know there there are suposed to be a few enteries with C:\Windows\WinSxS..... but there are only two! I will PM it to you if you want a look at it.

like to add that I had a look throught a backup made by Norton Ghost and in that it was 133KB in that backup, so 7kb is a huge reduction in size. And also nothing it geting made in the prefetch folder which is very odd.

That dose not work, it will not make another one, even if I delete the "new" one reboot several times and then try to run the command.

The small one that I have makes no mention of the documents and setting folder, is this normal? I had it in the old one.

If found out that the command needs Task Scheduler Service to be started.
Was your Task Scheduler Service enabled, when you ran the command ?

As i said in Post#9, the layout.ini sometimes also conatins info. abou programs that are un-installed and these simply take extra place in the layout.ini file.
So even the layout.ini file has to be cleared after sometime.
And to aviod the slow boots till it is re-created, you can use the commnad in Post#9 to immediately re-create it.
