can access the internet. AOL and AOL IM cannot connect. Both IE and Firefox cannot access any web pages. The use of either a URL or IP address results in an illegal operation. I tried reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol of my PCMCIA ethernet adapter card to no avail. I was thinking I might have to reinstall Windows but I hope there is a quicker and easier solution. Please help!

Two very easy things that often fix problems like this are System File checker and Register Scan.

Go Start>Run, type in sfc, then click OK and follow the prompts. It will tell you what files are defective. After that restart the computer in ms-dos mode, you do that with the Shut down buttom, when the prompt comes up type in

scanreg /restore

and hit Enter. In a few seconds it will correct any registry entries. These steps won't fix every problem but they are very simple and often effective.
