WinAntiVirus, WinFixer, and VIP Fares Popups [RESOLVED]

My computer seems to be infected with WinAntiVirus, WinFixer, and VIP Fares Popups. This is a brand new PC (1 week old) with all XP updates applied.

Steps Taken So Far:

1) CleanUp! was run.

2) Ad-Aware was run, it found only cookies.

3) CWShredder was run, it found no infections.

4) SpyBot S&D found no problems, and I immunized the system.

5) Ewido found no problems.

6) Trend Housecall found no problems.

7) AVG found no problems.

8) Trojan Hunter found no problems.

9) Windows Update continues to report "no available updates."

Hello and welcome!

Let's get started.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\abr.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: abr - C:\WINDOWS\abr.dll
  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

There was another entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: abr - C:\WINDOWS\JAVA\abrbas.exe

I asked HJT to "fix" that one, too, because I had a reasonable expectation that it was part of the same problem.

It doesn't seem to be popping up anymore, but I also switched to Mozilla Firefox and moved the shortcuts to IE into /dev/null -- I'm not going to be using it for anything but Windows Update.

Thanks for your help! Let's hope it stays fixed!

Great job.. It's clean! :)

Let's clear out your restore points now.

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

System Restore will now be active again. :) Be sure to set a new restore point, and if you need additional help with that, here's a link; http://filext.com/in...thread.php?t=27

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

Very cool! I hadn't even considered that my system would be set up for restore (I'm a very dedicated Windows 2000 and Linux user, and this is my very first -- and highly reluctant -- stab at Windows XP).

Switching to Mozilla Firefox is likely to prevent a lot of headaches in the future, and I'm kicking myself for not doing that to begin with.
