I have a Compac Presario 2100 laptop. My modem stopped working and I bought an external modem (Best Data 56k USB). But when I go so connect it doesn't make a tone sound it has a muffeld tone sound and does not work. It says it is unable to connect to ISP? Any suggestions?

drivers installed everything functioning now except sound modem emitt when dialing which is a muffled sound as opposed to the tone sound (when dialing)
