Hello

First, sorry if this has already been posted, but I think my line dropped before.

After an infection of spyware, I have followed your advice (several times around) and have managed to get nil reports and install SP2. As a precaution, I have set up IE so that it always asks for a password for each web page. IE keeps wanting to connect to oinadserver and pagead2.google and I don't seem to be able to put them into the restricted zone. (Norton Antivirus also dedected a Trojan called myurlff, which I had to quarantine, this may be relevant?)

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.


Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

Hello Buckeye_Sam,

Thanks for your help. I thought I had managed to post this reply before but perhaps not?

Since my last posting to you, I have taken a year’s subscription to Ewido. Anyway, in order to follow your instructions exactly, I set my subscription version of Ewido temporarily to “inactive” and down loaded another trial version to a different folder, installed it, updated it and ran it, following you instructions.

So here are my latest Ewido and Hijackthis reports. When looking at the HJT report, I can see a URL and program with names like lienvandekelder. These do not seem to have any relevance to my applications or data, as far as I know. Is this malware too?

Anyway, here are my reports and I await you further advice.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Double click on FixMytob.exe
Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.

Run FixMytob.exe once again as soon as you are booted fully.


Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Reboot once more and post a new hijackthis log and the info from Kaspersky.

Hello Buckeye_Sam,

Well, things are definitely looking good. I have followed your instructions with regard to HJT, FixMytob and deleting files etc.

There was one file in C:\WINDOWS\System32\,which I did not delete, although it matched your ??oolsv.exe description, namely spoolsv.exe. This was because it was much smaller, (57kB), but it did have a relatively recent date of 11/06/05. It had Microsoft Corpn 5.1.2600.2696 as its properties. Perhaps I should have deleted it too?

At the next step, I then found IE would not connect via the link to Kaspersky for the On-Line Scan, as IE kept saying “The page cannot be displayed”. I did try alternative ways of getting there and changing the IE Tools/internet Options/Security/Custom settings to “enable” all the options in the ActiveX sections, but without success. So I then down-loaded the trial version and update its virus definitions. But my PC then slowed right down and IE would not run. I guess I was having conflicts between Norton AV, Kaspersky and IE. I then tried switching Norton and Kaspersky off in turn, by disabling each one’s components and rebooting each time, but the problems continued. So I then had to uninstall Kaspersky. Things then returned to normal (with Norton AV re-enabled) but I still cannot connect via the link.

Anyway, as an alternative strategy, I then ran a Norton AV scan (with current virus definitions) and got a “zero viruses” result.

So, things have definitely improved. Since then IE has not tried to go to either Oinadserver or Pagead2.

Thanks for your prompt response. My turns take longer as this is a home computer, so this activity has to be scheduled in with everything else on the domestic front. Well, I’ve followed your instructions (Hoster etc) and now managed to link to the Kaspersky for the on-line scan, so here’s my Kaspersky log and latest HJT Log.

Hello Buckeye_Sam,

Thanks again for your prompt response.

I’ve deleted the offending e-mail from Outlook Express (and from the deleted folder) and used Windows Explorer to search the Inbox file for all references to 31 May 2005, all of which now appear to come from unrelated e-mails, albeit of the same date.

IE is behaving much better now and doesn’t seem to want to connect to unwanted sites.

The one remaining clitch is that Norton AV won’t retain Auto-Protect at each start-up and need s to be reset to “enable” each time I boot up. Doubtless there is a way to fix this, even if it means reinstalling it.

Many thanks for you invaluable support. It’s been first class. I’ve already recommended Geekstogo to friends and colleagues.

There's sure to be a setting within Norton somewhere that will enable autoprotect automatically. It looks like you have the correct startup files and services running so it's probably in the settings. If you have trouble finding it, take a look here.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
