Is it Spyware or Just a Slow PC? [RESOLVED]

My husband's laptop is running slower and slower. I have followed all the instructions for downloading and scanning his system, and only one of the programs found spyware-Trend Microsystems Housecall found something called Big Brother. I clicked to fix it and at first was unable to connect to the internet or get E-mail, but that problem has been resolved, and now I am just left with the slow running laptop. My husband ran his computer for several months without installing Zone Alarm, and I just suspect there may be malware here that I can't catch with the aid of the programs suggested. Hi Debbie and welcome to GTG.

Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned OFF in Notepad before you post your HijackThis log next time. As you can see, the formatting it creates (see the log you posted) makes it harder for us to read it. It's ok this time :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint

SpyKiller - it’s rogueware (or known to be rogueware in the past) and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Sorry for the wordwrap. I'm a new user to your forums & did not know to turn it off. I did everything you suggested except:

I did not find either of these in the Hijack Log I ran in Safe mode:

Do you see anything else that would cause this? Also, when I booted in safemode my husbands username was not available. I had to do a search for the Hijack This program from my username because I had put it on his desktop and it didn't show up on mine. Can spyware keep a username from showing up in safemode?

I'm not sure why this happens exactly. Is your husband's account an administrator account also?

Check and fix these in HijackThis while you are in Normal Mode:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Do you need that Webshots program? If not, check and fix it in HijackThis:

O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = C:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe

It's just another resource hogger since it's running at startup.

See if you can find and delete that SpyKiller folder.

Restart and see how it runs now.

If that still doesn't run faster, then uninstall Ewido. I usually tell users to keep Ewido since it's good to have and doens't conflict with other antivirus programs, but uninstall it and see if it improves the speed.

I fixed the two lines in HijackThis & I uninstalled Eiwdo. The computer seems to be running faster this morning, but I will check with him later to see if it is or just my wishful thinking. I am working a 12 hour shift today, so it will probably be tomorrow before I can diligently search for the SpyKiller folder. My husband uses Webshots because he likes the screensaver. The one in XP doesn't resize the photos, so he likes it better.

Also, the hard drive light doesn't seem to be running as much today. Perhaps we have corrected the problem? If I find SpyKiller and have trouble deleting it should I repost here or start another thread?

Thank you for all your help!!! There are things here that I wouldn't have messed with without some expert help.

No problem Debbie.

If you have problems deleting SpyKiller, you may just post it here. You should be able to delete it in Safe Mode :tazz:

Tell me the update on this. If it's all clear, make sure you get those spyware prevention programs. I will then close this topic

I plan to do at least a preliminary search for the Spy Killer folder tomorrow, and will post my findings then. He says he is not sure whether the computer is any faster at all after two days of spyware work... but maybe if I find the Spykiller folder that will help.

I have searched for SpyKiller in both regular mode and safemode and could not find any files or folder that contained either term "killer" or "Spy". When my husband gets up, I will have him try to help me search from a DOS prompt. He is familiar with the DOS commands, and I can't ever remember them. I know that on my daughter's computer there were several spyware items that could only be deleted from a DOS prompt... and I couldn't even use the emulator in Windows 98... it had to be the command prompt.

Do you still experience any slowdown now?

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I'm glad the log is clean. The computer is still running a little slower than I would like, especially when surfing the internet, but it could be something with the connection or the abilities of the computer.

I may return with logs from my daughter's computer (and will start a new topic if I do so), but I think my husband's is done. Thank you so much!!!!

Since you mentioned a slowdown in the internet, I want you to try this out:
Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

See if that will fix the problem.
