I am yet another person plagued with W32.desktophijack in wininet.dll and PSGuard. I think I am rid of PSGuard and days later it shows back up. Norton tells me every so often it has found WS32.destophijack but access is denied. I am already SP2 and the posts that I find are not. I thank you for any help. I have run Cleanup, Adaware (which found PSGuard and said it deleted it) CWShredder, Spybot and Ewido. This is my Hijackthis log:

Hi Dev, no please do not start a new thread since we are still working on the same computer with this problem :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

Delete this file -> C:\WINDOWS\osrwin32.exe <- if found

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

GreyKnight,
The Norton warning is gone! I had a terrible time downloading and running Panda. It took hours and I kept getting errors and having to start over. My machine still seems slow. Rtvscan.exe is taking up all the cpu and I have never noticed it doing that before.

Here is the Panda log:

Check and fix these in HijackThis:

N2 - Netscape 6: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%206%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\DYM\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\uf6k4qfz.slt\prefs.js)
O14 - IERESET.INF: SearchAssistant=
O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Boot into Safe Mode and run smitfiles.txt again. Then also run the Ewido scan and save the log.

Restart and post the Ewido log and a new HijackThis log here.

I want you to go to Start->Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck ONLY those programs you don't need at startup. Programs like QuickTime are not needed since you can run it manually. So ONLY uncheck those you know about. Leave everything else you are unsure of checked since they may be system related. See if that speed things up after another restart.

Just want to make sure, do you see those 3 entries if you run a HijackThis scan now? I see you posted this today but ran the scan yesterday. If they are still there, we'll try removing them again.

GreyKnight,
Yes that is my hijackthis log after I checked the 3 entries and said fixthis and then ran smitrem and ewido. I just ran out of time and did not get to post until the next day.
Thanks,
Dev

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop .NET Connection Service
sc delete .NET Connection Service
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Delete an NT service and type in .NET Connection Service and hit OK.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O14 - IERESET.INF: SearchAssistant=
O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.
