WinFixer 2005 Installer removal problem

It appears that I am not the only one who has had this problem.

My computer has somehow caught a bug -- a nasty little critter which pops up everytime I reboot my computer.

When I reboot I get a dialog box with the header: "WinFixer 2005 Installer"

In the dialog box is a message that says:

This program will download and install WinFixer 2005 on your PC.
By clicking Continue button you are accepting our terms and conditions

Under the above text is a button with "Continue" on it.

I always click the "X" in the top right of the dialog box to close it, but the rest of my family may not......

I have run Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware SE both in "normal" mode and in safe mode. They have cleaned out a lot of junk, but not this nasty little creature.

I have done some research on the net and discovered that there are a lot of sites that say WinFixer 2005 is a good program. Lots and lots! But I do not believe them. How can anything that is as difficult to get rid of as this thing be "good"? Not possible!

Can anyone tell me what this thing does and how I can get rid of it?

I presume you would like me to reboot, run a Hijack This log and post it here?

Thanks coachwife6, it's good to hear from you.

I guess that's what I get for not following the protocol. Not that I did that intentionally. But it goes to show that it is always best to read the instructions.

The HijackThis logfile is pasted below, but before you get there, please note that I tried another suggested "fix" that I found on the internet.

To get rid of the popup that wants you to install WinFixer 2005, go to Start; Run; type msconfig; click on the startup tab, and then uncheck the following file.

UWFX5LP_0001_0614NetInstaller

We have no idea where this nuisance came from and no doubt, something will later cause it to become checked again, in which case we will have to uncheck again.

How does something like this get inserted into the Startup menu to begin with? Is there anyway to actually get it out of the startup menu alltogether?

I followed the above instructions, and the above "fix" seemed to work. But, alas, it was all a mirage. Today, the WinFixer 2005 Installer box was back again. I checked the System Configuration Utility under the "Startup" tab, and even though the one I had "unchecked" was still unchecked, there was another one that was checked.

Where the "new" one came from I haven't a clue. I suspect some unsafe surfing by a certain teenager......

So, now I have not one but two of those bugs. Should I check the "first" one again, or does it matter?

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Well, coachwife6, for awhile I thought that the dratted Winfixer2005 installer was gone. But, it's baaacckk!

ARRRGGGHH!!

Other than always bringing up the Winfixer2005 Installer box every time on start-up, the computer appears to be running fine.

Got to start>>run>> and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Go to the start-up tab and see if winfixer is checked. If it is, uncheck it.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\<<folder
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWFX5LP_0001_0614NetInstaller.exe

Run CleanUp! When it finishes it will prompt you to restart Windows - there will be one or two files it cannot delete when Windows is running - however, they will be deleted next time Windows starts up.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working.
