Space on H/D

I have a 40 gig H/D,i recently reformatted but my H/D reports that i have 10.6 gig left.
H/D Contains,

ACTIVEDOC 40 MB
DOC AND SETTINGS 173 MB
PROGRAMME FILES 873 MB
WINDOWS 2.0 GB
CABS 251 MB
DOWNLOADS 2.24 GB
OEM 2.24 MB

Can someone help me in finding the space and what is using all of this space , it seems ive lost at least half of the space,so what is on it , i want to avoid another reformat.

how did you go about formatting the drive?

I have formated drive many times b4 , with the recovery disc.

just tried to restore back using 2 different times,wont restore.

Sorted now , it was system restore eating the space,but thanks for the replies
