Hi there,

I have followed all the instructions prior to posting my HJT log below.

Also refer to attached MW Word file [I think its attached, I can't see it anywhere after attaching].

I have a black wallpaper, constantly flashing (half screen, white screen, constant access to hard drive, windows message related to spyware). Also various screen messages, tray icon c/w speech bubble.

Any assistance appreciated.

Update 10 hours later:
This seems to be a very similar problem to that described at http://www.geekstogo...showtopic=57895.

I am also getting a McAfee message related to the Alemod virus, but McAfee does not seem to be able to remove it or quarantine it.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.

• Please download SmitRem.zip
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
• Please download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
  If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

• Please download Adaware SE 1.06
  Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.
  
  
• Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
• Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.
  
  
• Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido.
• Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
  
  
• Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
  
  
• Save the Panda scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hi Sam,

Followed your instructions. Ran Ad-Aware SE without doing the update.

Lots of gremlins were found. Things are looking up!

The PSGuard tray icon has gone. McAfee does not seem to be picking up the Alemond virus any more.

The black flashing screen and the constantly appearing windows messages have gone. The constant access to hard disk has gone.

Wallpaper is now blue, but the right 3/4 side of it is white (about where the PSGuard flashing messages used to be). I have not tried replacing the wallpaper with anything else yet. UPDATE: Got rid of the white section. It seemed to be due to "My Current Home Page loaded under Active Desktop", and my current home page is set to blank.

Couple of things I could not do as per your instructions:

Item 1: The following option was not available, presumably coz I am running Win2K Professional ?
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present

Item 2 : The Panda Scan did not give me an autoclean box to check:
Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Its been a few days, and I've been away ...........

But ........... good news.

All the problems now seem to be gone, so thanks very much for your assistance.

I have attached the updated the HiJackThis log below.

The only issue I have at the moment is with the computer taking quite a while to boot (about 3.5-4 minutes [the time split between [in the following] getting past BIOS load / a dash in left hand top corner / a cursor in the middle of the screen]. This seems to have started occurring after I loaded SP4 and iTunes, but before I got into all the Spyware woes. It is also taking a lot longer to shutdown (saving your settings ....), though nowhere near as long as the startup.

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • Click once on the Security tab

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Running Win2K Professional.

Part of my problem at startup appears to have been due to a wireless USB mouse. If connected this caused lengthy delays at BIOS load and the blinking cursor top left. These delays do not occur if I boot without the USB mouse wireless receiver inserted. There is still a delay at Windows load (about 1.5mins).

I used HiJackThis to remove:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CreateCD50] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\CreateCD\CreateCD50.exe" -r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"

I then switched on SpyBot with TeaTimer, and used HiJackThis to remove:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

SpyBot dtected the registry change and would not allow me to remove this task. I tried turning off SpyBot (from the program tray) and running HiJackThis and fixing it again. This appeared to work, but on reboot I was informed by SpyBot that the removel of this item from the registry had been refused and in running a HiJackThis log the qttask.exe entry is still there.

Should I turn off TeaTimer and try again?

Can I also remove:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe ?? (Someone suggested it might be adding unnecessary overheads)

Spybot's Teatimer will block most registry changes, so it's best to disable it and then make the fixes with Hijackthis. Once you reboot you can turn it back on.

You can research 04 startup entries in Hijackthis at either of these two sites to find out more info about what is starting up automatically.

Hi Sam,

I have removed all those 04 entries mentioned.

Still having a slow startup, but its a bit strange. If I shut down the computer (its a Dell D600 latitude laptop) by pressing the power switch OR if I shut it down when the login box appears during startup, THEN, the next time I startup the desktop appears in 50secs (although it takes another minute or so for all the programs to load into the bottom right tray).

When it takes a while to load, but the desktop finally appears, the bottom right tray is full of all the programs that loaded (but the sequence that network icons appear in the tray is reversed to that mentioned above).

So it seems in both cases to take about 2.5-3 mins to get everthing finally loaded, but in some cases the desktop appears sooner (and I can then start other programs while these are still loading).

Any thoughts?
