thanks in advance for your help. i ahve been in adware/spyware [bleep] the last 2 weeks since my daughter infected my PC trying to enhance her AIM buddy icons through an obviously bad site. I have cleaned up a great deal and everytime I think I have a handle on it, it re-appears.

History:

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot and Spyware Doctor and my Norton Anit-virus. Most now show as clean with exception of a couple cookies Ad-aware picks up and deletes. I have cleared out my IE cookies, temp files and web page history. I have deleted all *.tmp files I can find. I have reviewed my program file folder for obvious things and cleaned up what I'm comfortable with. I have deleted and re-installed the google toobar to see if it can control the popups. Doesnt seem to help much. I have also recently installed Spyware Blaster to help prevent new issues. Doesnt seem to help with current popup problem. I also have Norton Antispam loaded to help with email spam. I have tried to use some of the popup blocking capability in Antispam and in some of the other tools but I have found that if I invoke a too rigid block, it affects some of the public sites I need to use for my business as a stock trader. Antispam ad Blocker prevents my Ameritrade Streamer product from working which provides me with real-time info for my stock trades. The spybot product prevents me from viewing stock charts I use on StockCharts.Com because it advises me if I want to prevent a download on the site of some ads and if I say yes, it doesnt show my the chart and i get a blank screen.

Prior to the initial infection I had no problems with pop-ups.

Here is my log and THANKS for you help. I'm at my wits end on this.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E9CBA527-3AC2-3D36-E95F-3F76601F57C3} - C:\WINNT\system32\diryw.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Oiai] C:\Documents and Settings\David Iwinski\Application Data\saro.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Xuiti] C:\WINNT\system32\l?ass.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Reboot after doing so, preferably into safe mode and delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\David Iwinski\Application Data\saro.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\l?ass.exe <= Note: only delete the file that actually has a question mark in it's name. Do NOT delete everything a FindFiles turns up.

Outstanding! That seems to have fixed things. Pieter your awesome! Odd things though that when i went to delete the C:\Winnt\system32\l?[bleep].exe in safe mode I could not find one with a '?' in it anymore. I ran a subsequent Hijjack scan and its not there....Lets hope this did not run and hide somewhere only to pop up later!

I was curious about those files you said to delete but could not find any reference to what they were anywhere so i left them alone. Do you have any idea where they might have come from and if I have Spyblaster in place now should that prevent a reocurrance?

Spybot and ad-aware passed them by without notice.

THANKS AGAIN!

One more thing on the |?[bleep].exe file....I noticed this did not show up in the log other than the 04 HKCU reference when i first posted the log. So u must have deduced that it resided elsewhere in the System32 folder that needed attention when I rebooted in Safe mode. Correct?

Also when I do a file search for l?[bleep].exe 6 references pop up to it but NONE have the question mark in it. They all are LSASS.EXE. Is that because ? is some kind of wild card entry so all appear? I deleted none as you mentioned in red since none had a ? in the file. If you think I need to do anything else, please let me know.

You are 100% correct on the "?" as a wildcard in searches.

But the l?[bleep] was definitely present when you made your log.
Look at your running processes.

Maybe the file is hidden. Check here how to "unhide" those: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=192

Saro.exe (the other file I told you to delete) is probably already gone since NAV detects this as Adware.Purityscan
Try and find saro.exe and if you do upload the file here http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
I bet some of the other scanners will detect it as either Clickspring or Purityscan.

SpywareBlaster is helpless against these malwares, since they use a different kind of infection. AdAware does warn you about l?[bleep].exe if you read the scanlog, but only as a illegal filename. :tazz:
This will change shortly, no doubt.

Pieter
