Hi there,

I've been blessed with helping a friend with adaware / spyware removal on his system. After running multiple adaware / spyware removal programs, it still has a case of the WinFixer 2005 installer screen posting twice on startup.

It's system config is as follows:

Windows XP Home SP2
HP Pavillion 743c
2.4 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM

Here's what I've run so far, in safe mode:

Adaware 1.06
Spybot S&D 1.4
Ewido Security Suite
Spysweeper 4

Here's a copy of the HijackThis log. Help on this WinFixer 2005 and any other remaining adware / spyware would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

TSD

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
This will create a new folder called LQfix on your desktop.
Open the folder and doubleclick ClickThis.bat
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Post a new hijackthis log.

Hi Buckeye Sam!

Thanks for the help. I must admit, I've been trying to remove this adware myself since I last spoke to you. I believe I eradicated WinFixer 2005, but there is evidence of yet another program forcing pop-ups to gambling and [bleep] sites while browsing. It appears to be wtta.exe, and I have been unable to get rid of it.

I will follow your instructions explicitly from here on out. I have run the LQFix.exe application, rebooted, and pulled another HJT log. Please let me know how to proceed.

Thanks so much for your help.

You appear to have several active infections showing up in your log.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi Sam,

I did as you instructed. I noted that after I selected option one, there were several lines reported "Could not find the file specified". Then it proceeded to ask me to press any key to proceed. I did so, then it responded with windows stating that certain applications were not compatible with the MS-DOS or Windows subsystem. I pressed on by selecting Ignore twice, then it posted the following log window. Just thought I should pass that info on to you. Here's the log output. Thanks again for the help!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi Sam,

OK, I ran option 2 and got the log. To note, I encountered a couple of errors while running the app:

Killing explorer and Rundll32.exe
The system cannot find the path specified.
0 files copied.

Registry Editor
Cannot export backregs\0492F6C6-B98C-4008-AC88-AB1287A8EC5C.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

After OK, scanning proceeded and completed. I did see another error:

zip warning: name not matched: backregs\*.reg
zip error: Nothing to do! (backup.zip)

After that, the application proceeded and the following log was generated. Please tell me how to proceed from here.

Thanks,

Spotted Dog

One down and on the next issue.

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt along with a new hijackthis log.

Hi Sam,

I downloaded the program and ran it in safe mode (the first option, no networking, etc). FYI, the program was named WinPFind, and there was not a pfind.bat, but I launched a WinPFind.exe and I think this is what you wanted me to do.

Included below is the contents of the WinPFind.Txt file and the new HJT log, created after reboot to normal mode.

PS: an error window posted after rebooting in normal mode stating an application error occurred in WinLogon.exe.

PPS: Norton Antivirus automatically stated it removed elitebar. Only available response was OK.

Best,

Spotted Dog

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\qgqfxmtt]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8f289471-477d-4607-85cd-cbf114eddd77}]

Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\bdbja.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUNPS2.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gdgssfk.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wtta.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\ru.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vgactl.cpl
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\dkdlss.exe
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\tdtn.exe

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please post a new hijackthis log and and a new log from WinPfind.

Hi Sam,

I followed your directions. FYI - After reboot, I noted a message window posted: "RUNDLL Error loading AUNPS2.DLL The specified module could not be found."

Here are the logs. Please let me know what to do next.

Thanks!

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

We're looking better!! :tazz:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Hi Sam,

I ran HJT, checked the items, and ran fix checked. I tried to delete

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll

and was advised that the file could not be deleted, access denied.

Also, I noted, but did not delete, the following suspicious files in the system32 directory:

wuauclt1.exe
wuauclt.exe

I was able to delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

After doing the Fix Checked in HJT and rebooting, I was still unable to delete the wuauclt.dll file.

I pressed ahead and connected the computer to the internet to run Panda ActiveScan. I downloaded and installed the ActiveScan ActiveX Control. I did not see any option to run automatically. I proceeded by selecting to scan My Computer.

I should note that I did see a popup in the lower right corner of the screen. It actually looked like a popup from Real One Player Message Center stating "Paris Hilton, SI Swimsuits, More!". I hope this is benign. I closed the window by right-clicking on the taskbar button and selecting close.

I didn't notice any other pop-ups while ActiveScan was running! :-)

Here is a screenshoot from the ActiveScan completion status (see attached .jpg), as well as the ActiveScan and HJT logs.

Please let me know how to go from here.

Thanks!
