Please download and install Cleanup 4.0

Now run CleanUp
IMPORTANT!
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp

Use Killbox as before to delete these files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\adsmsext.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Searchx.htm
C:\backup.zip
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ocobmdr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Shex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqvpk.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\unuaid.exe

Please download LQfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will now reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.
Now do a scan with HiJackThis and post a new log by using Add Reply

Hi Sam,

OK, I downloaded and ran CleanUP, with the prescribed options. I noted that it advised me after cleanup that a couple of the files could not be removed until reboot, but I postponed the reboot and closed the app.

I then ran KillBox and pasted the files from keyboard. I selected the option to delete on reboot, as I had before, and then Killbox wanted a reboot. I couldn't tell from your instructions whether I should postpone reboot at that point or not. I did the reboot.

Windows rebooted into normal mode, albeit a bit slowly.

I noted in Task Manager after the reboot that wuauclt.exe is still in the running process list. However, wuauclt.dll is no longer in the C:\windows\system32 directory! There are still the wuauclt.exe and wuauclt1.exe files in system32.

I ran the LQFix.exe and it installed and tried to connect to the internet. The [bleep] Norton Personal Firewall software blocked access. I disabled Norton and tried again. This time it downloaded the BFU.zip, executed it, and advised me to reboot to complete installation.

After reboot, I ran HJT, and attached is the log. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks again!

I noted in Task Manager after the reboot that wuauclt.exe is still in the running process list. However, wuauclt.dll is no longer in the C:\windows\system32 directory! There are still the wuauclt.exe and wuauclt1.exe files in system32.

That's perfect! The wuauclt.exe and wuauclt1.exe files are legitimate Windows files that handle your automatic updates. The dll file that you deleted however, was malware.

Please fix this line with Hijackthis.

Hi Sam,

Alright, I fixed the item and rebooted. Here's the new HJT log. Thanks for letting me know about the wuauclt processes.

Best,

Hmmm...that line still shows up in your log.

Please fix it again with Hijackthis log and then post a new log from WinPFind.

Hi Sam,

I checked the item in HJT and ran fix checked items again. Here's the new HJT and WPFind logs.

I rebooted the system and ran HJT again. Unfortunately, the item reappeared after reboot. I included the second HJT log below. What to do about this issue?

Best,

Spotted Dog

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\qgqfxmtt]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1ee47240-090f-43e8-b588-497dce3aab11}]

[[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]]
"winsync"=-

Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\lglfw.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\okoiolt.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\tdtn.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\unuaid.exe

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please post a new hijackthis log and a new log from WinPFind.

Hi Sam,

OK, I followed your steps as prescribed. Here are the new logs.

Unfortunately, the winsync key is still present after reboot. Any other ideas?

Best,

Spotted Dog

Fix this line with Hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\unuaid.exe reg_run

Use Killbox to delete these two files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\unuaid.exe

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

Hi Sam,

Well, I fixed the item in HJT again. I tried to delete the items using KillBox, but the app wouldn't accept my paste from clipboard. Turns out the files do not exist in the system32 directory. A search of My Computer found:

unuaid.exe exists in two places:
C:\!Submit\unuaid.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\UNUAID.EXE-1C2D2DC6.pf

wuauclt.dll exists in one place:
C:\!Submit\wuauclt.dll

I wonder if Panda ActiveScan or another program put the files in C:\!Submit? It occurs to me that I did try to submit the unuaid.exe file to Panda ActiveScan when the ActiveScan identified it as a file they wanted to investigate...

Regarding the Prefetch directory, I think this is where the unuaid.exe is getting loaded. Here's something I found on the web:

"Windows XP (and its successors) contains a directory named prefetch in the %WINDIR% (usually something like C:\windws. As discussed in this article, windows' prefetch manager monitors which files are used at startup and application starts. When Windows starts, it opens those files and brings them into memory in such order that the heads of the harddisk have a minimal moving, thus reducing the time needed to boot and start applications. The name of these files consist of two parts: the name of the application that uses it and a hashed version of the file path, for example: PERL.EXE-1300F3C0.pf. The suffix is pf. "

I proceeded to install the ewido security suite and the definition updates. The installer asked me to reboot before running the program.

Because I figured that the reboot would reinstall the undesired unuaid.exe key, I decided to manually delete the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\UNUAID.EXE-1C2D2DC6.pf before rebooting.

After reboot, I checked HJT, and found that the unuaid.exe key was no longer present!

I proceeded to run the ewido security suite. It found 30 infected items which it removed. I rebooted and ran HJT again for a new log. Still no unuaid.exe key found!

The logs for ewido and HJT are below. Also, I included a directory output of the C:\Windows\Prefetch directory, just in case you see anything interesting there. Let me know how it looks.

Best,

Spotted Dog

The !Submit folder is created by Killbox and holds backups of all the files that you deleted with Killbox. At this time it's safe to delete that entire folder and everything within it.

You can also delete all of the files within the prefetch folder. This is a good thing to do every now and then to clean out the pf files from older programs that you no longer run. New prefetch files will automatically be created as needed.

Your log looks clean to me! :tazz:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
