Please help! Have followed all other recommendations and still no sucess. Slow internet downloading when surfing the web. Please see log below. Would greatly appreciate any help and suggestions.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Please note that I have merged both of your posts into this thread to stop you getting two helpers for the same problem. You have a little malware that needs to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:
CWShredder
CCleaner
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

We have tried all your suggestions and by the way this pc has only one identity.

Hello again,
The reason we think it is a spyware issue. Slow internet speed lead us to call our dsl provicer who did many checks on speed connections and confirmed everything o.k. and suggested spyware. See log below and once again thank you so much. Mark

The Silent Runners log is negative.

Please download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items". When it's done scanning, please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

There is normally a part of the log after the broad announcement with the paths of files linked with the infection. Do you still have the log? If so, could I see that part; this just tells me that you are infected without telling me what file in which location is doing it.

If you don't have that, and I wouldn't want you to do another 3 hour session, lets go to

Panda ActiveScan and let it remove the malware automatically.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. We did not keep the log so we went ahead and ran the Panda ActiveScan. It scaned and destroyed three items. (2 spyware, 1 virus). And still the internet was slow. That was yesterday. Today we can't get online at all. We are responding to you from the kids computer. Thank you for your help so far but now what?

I have just reviewed the thread again to refresh my memory. There is nothing in any of those logs to cause loss of internet.

I was suspicious of it not being a malware issue a few days ago, I think this confirms it.

Now I am no expert on matters not malware, but if you are using the same connection on a different PC, that would rule out the modem and line and take you logically to your PC either s/ware or h/ware.

Can I take it that it does boot? If so, please generate another HJT log and look for a listing starting with 010, that being the area where LSP are hijacked by malicious dll's.

If there is nothing there, then you have to consider run a SYSTEM FILE CHECK to see if you Operating System has been corrupted.

The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.
