Hi :) ,

I have been infected with WinFixer and cannot seem to get it out. Downloaded ewido and did scans as well as deletions, did a Search and Destroy as well. Am otherwise protected by 'Norton Antivirus'. :)

WinFixer is still there and I would appreciate all the assistance possible to remove it. Since it has a lot of home and search pages I am not too sure if the computer is also infected with anything other than WinFixer.

I downloaded the HijackThis and got the log report; please review as soon as you can and advise on my next steps.

Thank You and Best Regards,
Linda, waiting patiently :tazz:

Welcome Linda to Geeks to Go!

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:
    O16 - DPF: {AED98630-0251-4E83-917D-43A23D66D507} (WebHandler Class) - http://activex.micro...n7/dlhelper.cab
  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted:

Make sure all hidden files are showing:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Open Windows Explorer.
Move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\System32
Remove all files named:
qstwa

Please post a new HijackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Hi :) , (not mad with you  )

bad news; did everything. no screen of death; rebooted computer; went into C:\WINDOWS\System32. Removed the following:

1. qstwa.bak1
2. qstwa.bak2
3. qstwa.ini
4. qstwa.ini2
5. qstwa.tmp

All files seemed to have been deleted permanently except:

qstwa.ini2 which keeps coming back into the folder.

Started Windows Explorer and got: WinAntiSpyware 2005 spyware site. :)

Also got warning from ewido that:

SPYWARE VIRTUMONDE is installed (awtsq.dll) in system32. Deleted it many times but its back. One of the search pages: search.starware.com/search.php?product=hsearch&tmpl=1B&src_id=9000&qry=%20computer+desktop
:)

Also noticed; there is a file called qwinsta.exe near in the vicinity; have any idea what this is?

Finally, here are the log files:

qwinsta.exe
This utility will show you logged on users and their status, and can be used remotely as well. The information is similar to what you see when you look at terminal services management.

Ok, if that ini file won't leave the nice way, we will kill it.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\qstwa.ini2

Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsq.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtsq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsq.dll
  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal! Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted:

Open Windows Explorer.
Move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\System32
Remove all files named:
qstwa

Please post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

We need to take a look at the Winfixer issue, but first let's do this part.

I take it you were able to remove all file by that name?

Is the computer running ok?
If so, shall I post you some tips for the future and close this topic?

Hi there,

Yes the computer appears to be running ok. We are running another Ewido scan now to make sure.

We weren't sure whether WinFixer was also removed during the process we went through. Does the HIjack This log indicate that Winfixer and everything else is gone?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Is Ewido now better than Microsoft ANtiSpyware which is what we run on this computer in memory always? Will having both of them on slow down the computer?

6.22pm
I ran the ewido scan and it came up clean except for minor cookies which it deleted.
That is, no more qstwa files. ewido also did not pick up any Spyware Vitumonde. :)

Important questions: Does the HIjack This log indicate that Winfixer and everything else is gone? Is Ewido now better than Microsoft ANtiSpyware which is what we run on this computer in memory always? Will having both of them on slow down the computer? If we have to make a choice, do you suggest Ewido??? WE ALSO WELCOME YOUR TIPS! :)

Whilst waiting on your feedback, I'll be leaving my donation and TY once again for all your assistance. The topic can be closed after your reply. All the best. :tazz:

The logs look clean, looks like you did it.

Each program has it's own strong points, AntiSpyware is good, so is Ewido. It depends on your computer if it will get slowed down if you use both active. Ewido is a trial for two weeks, see if you like it enough to buy it or remove it after the trialperiod.

I'll post you the tips. A donation is more than welcome :tazz:

Stay well!

------------

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
