Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
- C:\WINDOWS\repair\binmsvc.dll
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\repair\binmsvc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: binmsvc - C:\WINDOWS\repair\binmsvc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: xmlsvc - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\xmlsvc.dll
After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
Once your machine reboots please post a new HijackThis log as well as the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

How is your computer running now?

Do you know what this is VDNUB ... can't find any info on it.
If you don't know what it is can you navigate to C:\WINDOWS\VDNUB.exe
then RIGHT click on it and tell me the properties on it

seems to be doing good now, but i'd thought that before and was then bombarded again with the winfixer popups.

funny you mention vdnub. when this problem first started, i'd been doing google searches on all of my running processes and was able to identify every one of them except for this vdnub.exe. i have no clue what it is but it appears to be gone now (according to my HJT log and a quick browsing of C:\Windows).

I'm hesitant to say this problem is resolved, but so far everything looks good. I suppose I could get back with you in a day or 2 and let you know for sure.

quick question: do you think it would be fine at this point to upgrade to sp2?

If you didnt find that file then you can check this off in hijack

Then click fix checked

ack missed one .scan with hijack and fix this one and you should be good to go

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
