I have an AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz cpu. 512 mb RAM. 200gb seagate IDE hdd. I run Windows XP. I have IE, but hardly ever use it as my main browser is FireFox.

Just lately, in the last few days, my computer has been very noticibly sluggish. Everything the computer does overtaxes the cpu. Just opening a program will spike the cpu up to 95-100% for 5-10 seconds.

The programs seems to settle down in cpu usage afterwards, hanging around 5-10%. But anytime you do something such as save or exit, ect, it spikes up again. If you have two programs open and wait for them to stabalize, then merely switch from one program to the other, the cpu spikes again.

This also happens quite badly on startup, taking 2 or more minutes at the xp loading screen. It's not a smoothe load either, as it starts of with the blue bar scrolling across the screen at a constant speed, then it slows down and gets jerky.

I wouldn't be so worried if this didn't just happen in the last few days. I have done everything that the instructions said in the "You must read this before posting" thread, using TrojanHunter and nod32 as the anti trojan/AV. Windows has been patched up to latest SP and has been for months. After all that I still have the problem, so here is my HijackThis log. Please help me!

I've also found Diskeeper will not defag my drives. It keeps saying a CHKDSK is scheduled, and even after the CHDSK has run and the computer has rebooted, it will say the same message.

I think that CHKDSK is working really slowly, because it took all night to check a 20 gb partition. So might be my cpu is messing with it before window's really loads, or it could be just normal speed and I just feel its slow.

It seems to be getting worse. It always tries to run CHKDSK on drives e and f, (I have c-g). Even when I run them through to completion, the next reboot it tries to run it again, and I havent even scheduled any of them.

Today the computer froze when I was chatting on msn, and then restarted itself. Only it didn't recognise I had a hard drive, until it was reset again.

Please run a new hijack this log and a silent runner's log.

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Do not put it in quotes, please. Tough on this old lady's eyes. :tazz:

Sorry about the quotes coachwife, I thought it might make it stand out more, but I guess not :tazz:

Are you running Eset/NOD32 anti-virus and Norton anti-virus? If so, please uninstall one. That may be the root of your problem. If one is a firewall, leave it as a firewall.

Go to start>>run>>and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Go to the startup tab and uncheck the entry for cacheman.

Look at this explanation.

http://www.bleepingc...an.exe-695.html

Try those out and see how it goes. :tazz:

Nod32 is the antivirus, Norton is just the utilities. The Norton AV is not installed.

Cacheman was recommended to me after I told some friends about what is happening to my comp. I've taken it out of startup like you said.

So far, the comp is still playing up.

I mean I only use the Northon Utilities part of Norton. Not the AV. The AV isn't even installed.

ie: Norton SystemWorks.
One-Buttone-Checkup
Norton Utilities include - Norton System Doctor, Norton Windows Doctor

No improvement yet either.

Norton is known as a huge resource hog.

Please provide me with the list of uninstallable programs:

To Provide a List of Installed Programs

1. Run HijackThis.
2. Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
3. Save list to Desktop
4. Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

You look clean. I notice that you have a great deal of video editing programs. Do you have a great number of videos, pictures, music on your system? That may be why it's slow.

I only have one more option before turning you loose to the xp forum.

Run a rootkit revealer. here is where you can download the trial version of it. That page also explains exactly what it is, and what it does.

Let me know if and what it finds, and we'll go from there!

Ok, I ran that test and it came out with 0 hidden, 0 removed or something like that.

So I guess my computer is clean. Must be something else. Perhaps an installed program or xp itself messing up. I appreciate your help CoachWife. Any last effort advice?

You can start a thread in the xp forum and see what they say. If you want it to boot up faster, you can check off some programs you don't need on start-up.

Run hijack this and put check marks next to these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb05.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jet Detection] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\PROGRAM\ADGJDet.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cacheman] C:\PROGRA~1\Cacheman\Cacheman.exe
O4 - Global Startup: SpeedFan.lnk = C:\Program Files\SpeedFan\speedfan.exe

See if that helps.
