After running Ad-aware SE, Spybot, CWshredder, and Viruscan, I have my desktop background back, but PSGuard keeps reloading and slowing down system. Cannot remove virus detected in c:\windows\system\wininet.dll (w32/alemode.e.dll)

Here is HiJack This Log File: Please Help.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, and the contents of the smitfiles.txt log.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks for getting me going in the right direction. Not as simple as thought however.

Did as you instructed until got to PandaScan. Unfortunately, when I connected to the web to run the scan, PSGuard also started loading again in the background and locked up system. After multiple restarts and attempted PandaScan, I went back to SafeMode.

Re-ran: SmitRem, Ad-Aware, Spybot and removed at least 80 psgaurd files.

Rebooted and ran PandaScan- again locked up system but not before the scan had deleted the virus in wininet.dll.

Rebooted but wininet.dll now gone (error) and system unstable.

Ran System File Checker for deleted files per suggestions from various posts on this site and was able to restore wininet.dll from 98se installation disk.

Reboot- now error due to old wininet.dll. Went to windows update and downloaded IE6 Critical Update and ran IE Repair Tool which got me to latest version of wininet.dll. (wininet.dll version 6.00.2800.1511)

Have now rerun PandaScan to completion, Adawar, Spybot, and HJT. All seems to be running well at this point.

Locate wininet.dll in your system folder and right-click to copy it (make sure you don't
cut it!), then paste it on the desktop. This way the file won't be in use.

Download a trial version anti-virus that will clean the file such as Kaspersky (not the online scan, but the full download trial). AVG won't work, unfortunately, because it doesn't even notice it's infected! Once it's on the desktop run a full system scan with the anti-virus program, then when it gets to the wininet.dll on the desktop make sure it doesn't get deleted, but that it gets cleaned.

Then once it's cleaned, have rename wininet.dll in the system folder to wininet.old, then copy the clean one off the desktop and paste it into the system folder

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.
