[Bus Driver]

Hello. My computer was recently molested by some nasty spyware manufacturers. The most obvious change their garbage programming made was the addition of a toolbar to my Explorer browser. Also, Norton Anti-Virus told me I had a Trojan Horse - msclean.exe - that it could not access or repair. Fake Windows Security Bubbles surface in my task bar from time to time and tell me I may have a virus, same thing with little pop-up security windows. I was also forwarded to a homepage not of my choosing; msblank.html.

I got rid of a great deal of the problem - starting with the toolbar. I've also got the msblank.html problem handled.

However, Norton still detects msclean.exe - and I'm still getting the false security warnings. (Do we have to even mention that my computer is running incredibly slow? )

I tried to run it again, and now it will not work. (I tried rebooting, etc. too.)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode


Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

After researching that file and using KillBox on it, the problem seems to have been solved. I've restarted a few times to make sure it wasn't going to proliferate from the registry again.

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

It's not actually from Windows, it's a little icon that LOOKS like the Windows alert. Little yellow shield with an exclaimation point in the center - and a bubble alert that says something like, "Warning, your computer may be infected. Click this bubble to learn how to protect your PC." It's been a symptom of this malware problem from the beginning.

Oh, and also now my Norton Anti-Virus program will not allow me to turn on the auto-protect function. Yay.

Please download SmitRem.zip

• Save the file to your desktop.
• Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.



Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
• The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Post the log file from Smitrem well as a new hijackthis log.
