Occasionally When running IE (6) in the past few weeks, another IE window will pop up and automatically load one of a number of websites. Most frequently it loads a site called "Winfixer" or "Allmax Travel".
This started a few weeks ago after I visited a number of free video game sites some of which required that I install a driver. Normally, I decline any site that requires me to install anything; however, I was particularly bored, so I agreed. (I now regret that.)
A few other notes. I have SP1 not SP2 or SP1a. I've tried installing SP2 before, but all it does is result in me losing my internet connection and a massive slow down of my computer. After trying a few times to install SP2, I decided to just stick w/ SP1. Also, I read the report on Microsoft's support site that suggests that if one has SP1 there is no need to install SP1a. I've excerpted their comments from http://support.micro...om/?kbid=813926 :
"if you are already running Windows XP SP1. Microsoft does not recommend that you install SP1a if you are already running SP1.
Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a."
Also, I've followed your instructions as best as possible b/f posting the HTF. While running Adware it pointed out that I had a program called Alexa which may be a security risk. However, I don't believe this is the source of the problem and is only an issue if one clicks on the "Show Related Links" option under the "Tools" menu of IE (http://www.imilly.com/alexa.htm). For this reason I left it.
As well, when running Trojan Scanner it detected the following files:
Found trojan file: C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\closeAll.exe (Dialer.Dis.100)
Found trojan file: C:\WINDOWS\browser.exe (Dialer.Dis.100).
I know what the SBC support tool is and did not delete it; however, I do not know what the second file is. I worry that it might be an important file that the Scanner mistook for a malicious one. Any clarification you could offer would be helpful.
Let me apologize in advance if I've forgotten something. I am not computer savvy at all. Below is the HJT log.
Thank you,
Sayeed
