:) I am so upset with this PS Guard virus. They seem to be a legit outfit but they infected my system just to get my attention. I hate PS Guard and I cannot for the life of me remove it from my Windows 98 computer. I was wondering if there is a way to take it out of my computer. Can anyone help? :tazz: Thank you in advance. :)

Hello Fat2000,

Welcome to GeekstoGo my name is Snickets and I will be helping you today!!!

1.Set up a folder by doing the following.
To create a folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.

2. Then go here to download the latest version of hijack this 1.99.1 and save this into the folder you created for hijackthis.

3. Double-click on the hijackthis.exe to scan.
Select "Scan and Save Log".
After the scan save the log somewhere where you will remember.
Then go to the location where you saved the hijack this log and open it up, then hit CTRL A to highlight all the text inside, then right click and hit the copy option then paste the contents back into this thread.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello Fat2000,

Please print out these instructions or copy and paste them to a notepad for easy access as you will be running in safe mode for most of this fix and will not have an internet connection.

Downloading Necessary Programs

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html
Once installed, launch CCleaner:
Do not change any settings, except to make sure on the Options tab>Advanced "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" is NOT checked. Close CCleaner

The Fix

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
===================================================
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://rd.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = =%3D
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

After checking these entries CLOSE ALL open windows [browsers and programs] EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
===================================================

Open CCleaner and click run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe

Please reboot into normal windows at this time.

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

After this scan is complete please rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, along with the ewido scan log and the Active scan log for me to review.

Thank you,
Snickets

Hi Snickets,

I have problem with the Ewido software. It's only for Win XP or 2K and I have a Win 98SE. Is there an alternate program I can use that does the same thing as Ewido? :tazz:

Thanks,

Please go here and download the free 30 day trial for trojan hunter.

Save the program to a place where you can find it easily, like your desktop. Then once saved you need to install the trojan hunter onto your computer. Then it will prompt you to update the definitions, please do so at this time.

Once the program opens-

1. Push the full scan button at the top right hand corner of the program.

2. Then once the scan completes, please remove all trojans found on the system by checking the individual infections, then clicking on clean.

3. Once the clean is complete, please copy the scan log and paste it into the next reply.

Try this one instead.

Thanks,
Snickets
