What problems are you having here? I don't see anything much:

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Hello Greyknight,

My diplay tabs are missing. The only one I have is themes. Also, my CPU is running at 100% all the time. I downloaded Edwido Security Suite, ran a scan and it found 14 problems,(that no other scans from others found), the most disturbing being the "Not-a-virus.Pornware.PopCap.b". I deleted all of the issues including this one, with backup. This did not fix my display tabs. I've tried many things to fix them, from registry fixes to downloading fixing files. Nothing is working.

Thanks for your response, I'll run another HJT scan and follow your instructions.

Okay, I "fixed" the entries you listed except the last two. Those are part of an online image viewer for the radiology department at the hospital i work at. I'm the applications tech for our referring doctors who use our online viewer.

Do you want me to run another scan?

Decide whether you want to keep AVG or Norton. Those two will conflict, so uninstall one of them now.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis and smitfiles.txt.

Here is the smitfiles.txt stuff.

I ran a panda scan last night and came up clean, but I'm trying to run it again, because I've run so many scans, I can't remember if I saved a log of it, or if there even was a log. It's saying that it's 100% complete, but if it is, it certainly didn't take as long as it did last night. No sign of a log or anything, just the scanning window with the green bar on it.

Also, "security info" wasn't present when I was in safemode and in display.

here is the smitfile log.

I have a question about some files I found.

SVCHOST.EX_ and SVCHOST.EXE were both found in C:\1386. (both file names in all caps if that is relevant)
I also found svchost.exe in C:\windows\system32, which is where it should be, right?

Also, I found WINLOGON.EX_ and WINLOGON.EXE in C:\1386. Does any of this look suspicious to you? These file names are associated with the W32Rbot trojan, from what I've read. But, all my virsus scans come up clean, so just tell me if I need to GET A LIFE. (lol) This is driving me crazy.

Those files are most likely backups of the original file. I would leave them alone since they would have been detected by the virus scans if they were bad. Nope, you're good :tazz: Always good to be cautious.

The find by Panda is ok/minor. If you want, you may search and delete it in the registry if found (backup registry first - ask me if you don't know how or just leave it alone).

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

The only issues remaining are my CPU running at 100% and I still have no display property tabs. This all started when a kid that WAS living here tried to bypass my windows password. Could he have started this thing in safemode and gotten to the internet that way?
The day I found out he did this I was having SERIOUS problems. I was getting a limited/no connectivity message from my modem, and all kinds of crap. Long story, but finally got back online, but these issues remain.

Thanks for all your help. You've been wonderful.

Hi Annika, no problem. If you want, I can help still try to assist you on this problem.

Does Norton Internet Security have a firewall program already? Just asking since I also see that you have ZoneAlarm. My suggestion is to get rid of Norton completely and keep ZoneAlarm as your firewall and also get a program called Grisoft AVG as your antivirus program. That might free up some resources since Norton is known to be a HUGE resource hogging machine.

Do you have any problems online or just offline with the 100% resources used?

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. See if it finds anything and possibly fix the missing tab problem.

I don't think it's possible for that kid to go into your machine without a password. XP has a pretty decent login system unlike Windows 98.

Hello again:)

I'm scanning now and a box popped up saying, "files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced with unrecognized versions, blah, blah, blah....and it asks me to insert my Windows cdrom now. So, I put it in, and there is a lovely clicking noise coming from the tray and it's not doing anything. Tried to load it into my lower tray, but no luck there either. I'm screwed, I fear.

Okay, the cd is working now, but it's asking me what I want to do.....what DO i want to do? ack. My options are

set up remote connection (nope)
set up a home network (nope)
transfer files and settings (nope)
browse this cd (when i did, a page with some files and stuff popped up)
view the release notes

I feel like an idot. I hope you're not laughing TOO hard at me.
