Detecting DrWatson Errors From a Script

Problem:
We have a Java type of program application that runs on W2k server that throws a Dr. Watson error periodically.

Current detection and solution:
Someone screams that they can't use the application; IT then remotely logs into that w2k svr, see a big Dr. watson dialog error box on the screen, which they then confirm the dialog box, restart the Java application, and wait for future screeming from users.

Request for help:
I want to write a script (korn shell using cygwin, or a DOS script, or even a Java pgm) that will be able to detect when a dr. watson error has occurred on a svr and then notify us or take action to restart the application that died.

Basically I want to be able to detect programatically when Dr Watson errors have happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi dimanni1. Welcome to GTG. :tazz:

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log as a new topic in the Hijack This forum. It will get a better response there from the people most qualified to analyze logs.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide. Also see this post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

hello and thanks for the reply.

I don't think that running Hijack is the appropriate suggestion for this question and problem.

Basically, when some java application throws a Dr. Watson error and it hangs that application; I want to be able to detect that dr. watson error from another program I am running that monitors the Java app. for dr. watson errors.

So, I want to KNOW when a Dr. watson error happens!

Thanks,
Damon

You can simply disable Dr Watson via a registry entry, but it's been our experience that in almost every case this error is caused by a malware infection on a system with SP2 (often becasue SP2 was installed on an infected machine). :tazz:

Let us see a HijackThis log, and we can rule that out.

I would greatly appreciate help with DrWatson Postmortem Debugger. This is a new development for me. It occurs when I open my Pinnacle Studio 9.
Thank you
