Hello Ari and many apologies for not replying sooner; the subscription did not work, but I have altered it now.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Ari Eisenberg\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\pguqbia4.slt\prefs.js)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Biomenu] "C:\Program Files\Protector Suite QL\menusw.exe"
O20 - Winlogon Notify: psfus - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fusstub.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files or foders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Protector Suite QL\ - folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Ari Eisenberg\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\pguqbia4.slt - file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fusstub.dll - file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please post a fresh HJT log.

Sorry Ari

Of course it is. I must go to bed!

The N3 and 020 are bad though.

Goodnight!

Good morning Ari

It looks good except for the 020 entry - definitely bad. If it doesn't go this time, we'll have to deep scan. Your Mozilla/Netscape browser settings look OK now.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: psfus - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fusstub.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file it:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fusstub.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

May I see a fresh HJT log please.

"Edit,
As there has been no reply from the original poster this topic is now closed,
Should you have any further problems please create a new Topic,

Thanks "

Hello again Ari

This problem won't make me crazy, I've been crazy for a long long time.

Your HJT log is not revealing much, just one little spy that likes to "phone home" but nothing malicious or popup related.

I think we have looked at WinPfind and cleared out the stuff it identified; I feel that there is only one other place to go, sorry:

Please download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
Please run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the following items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items". When it's done scanning, please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Would you please also run Ewido in safe mode. Update it first of all and then run the Complete System Scan. Please post the log in this thread.

working on it -- btw i wanted to also have you take a look at my girlfriends computer (I did the basic stuff that is listed to do before you post)--should I post it as a new thread? What can I do to protect my computers in the future form these weird "non detectable " viruses and spy ware?

If you post your girlfriend's HJT log into this thread (if convenient to do), I will look at it, or post a serarate thread for my attention (marked as such) then send me a PM at the same time with the URL (the number at top right of thread, click it and copy the long reference that opens).

In terms of protection from malware, I recommend 1 x Antivirus scanning programme running in real-time, 1 x Antispyware scanning programme running in real-time, as many "on demand" antispyware scanners as you want but make sure they are reputable, and most of all change your internet browser away from Microsoft Internet Exporer to Mozilla Firefox or Opera. I think you already use Netscape if i recall correctly.

Your system should be fully scanned every day for virii and malware, and the programmes doing the scans should be updated before each scan.

Much of the malware appears to come from music or gaming sites, or comes as bundled third paty software from a free piece of software. Always read the EULA!

The subject of firewalls is fairly straightforward in that they act a little bit like a security guard or nightclub bouncer i.e. "If you're not on the list, you aren't coming in". But conversely, if you are, then come right in.

So in one sense, you can have your firewall as tight as you want it. You could block everything but then you wouldn't go very far, so most firewalls tend to let in things that are on your list of allowables and then ask your permission about everything else. Generally, if you decide to block entry, it is remembered and blocked in the future without asking you. Hence, the longer you have the firewall running, the fewer the enquiries.

That sounds easy, but in reality, if your firewall asked your permission every time, you'd get pretty fed-up very quickly of answering, and you'd make a lot of mistakes, simply because you can't be expected to know everything that is bad.

Firewalls can work both ways in and out and most of the software based ones do. They use a variety of methods in considering what is bad and what appears to be good.

My personal view is that they are necessary with networks and for commercial companies. But for the home user with a single PC hooked up to an internet connection of any type, I think that the built-in firewall in Windows XP is sufficient, although I would recommend anyone using a different OS to install one.

To check your firewall, simply go to http://www.grc.com/default.htm and follow the links for Shields Up where you will invite the hacking site to find you. I am running the XP built-in firewall as gateway to my home network and, according to Shields UP, I am completely stealthed, although I am traceable to my ISP.

Now, your second post is a joke - right?
