Upon placin a CD-RW in my CD writer for formatting, i am informed by my system that the newly-bought-only-just-opened CD, is an audio cd with 1 cda track on it. neroplayer always starts up to try and play the track and is unsuccessful. this happens with every CD. If its any help my CD writer is a Lite-on, running on nero express.

That's a strange problem. Maybe just a bad batch of CDR's. About the only thing I can recommend is that you remove and reinstall your burning software, and check Lite-on's site for a firmware update.
