I have been getting a small balloon that pops up in the system tray with a yellow shield.
It says "Your virus protection status is bad. Spyware Activity Detected Click this balloon
to fix this problem." Clicking on it opens a browser window. And interestingly enough the little balloon pops up when i paste what it says.

There is also a message box that comes up which says "
Again, clicking yes opens a browser window.

I have tried scanning with Ad-Aware and Spybot, both of which freeze. Ewido removed something like 300 things, but did not affect this. A few other programs didnt seem to have any effect either. I suspect i got it while playing counterstrike.

Also, Outlook has a problem connecting to my pop3 account, which im guessing could be fairly bad as far as someone reading my things. I have Norton Firewall, Spyware Blaster, a netgear wireless router, and a Sonicwall firewall because of vpn connections to my work.

There is also a problem with restarting. When ever i restart, it stops on a black screen right before the windows screen, so i have to turn off the power and turn it back on which usually works. However, the keyboard seems not to work during the startup so it is extremely difficult if not impossible to get to safe mode.

The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart) choose yes. After you have rebooted, click here to download hclean.zip. Extract hclean.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done double-click the hclean.reg, when asked to merge say yes.

Download and save FindT to your desktop. Extract the files inside to the root drive (C:\). Open the FindT folder and doubleclick runthis.bat. You'll get a log that will be saved in the same folder. Post the log FindT created and a new HJT log.

And while were messing more or less with things that start up when I turn it on, there are 3 browser windows which open, 2 blank ones and one with C-Span. The arent simply in the startup folder and i couldnt find them in msconfig, so if u could tell me how to disable those that would be awesome.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

• Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  
• Then right click on your Default Connection
  • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
• Left click on Properties
• Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
• Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
• Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK

ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.

• Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

• Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
• Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Your system will reboot now.

I had one question about mdm.exe, lsass.exe, and smss.exe, which i have been told are bad, but to my knowledge they dont do anything.

They can potentially be bad if you find them running at startup or from the wrong location, but otherwise they are critical system files and perfectly legit.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
