Hey guys,
I got the CD for XPSP2, and was wondering about your take on SP2 is. Can it mess up my puter? Would it help things run better??

I ordered the CD and installed it righ away, no problems. Just make sure you do a spyware scan beforehand and backup your system. There have been lots of reports of people having trouble installing SP2 or it messing up their machine. It depends on your software/hardware configuration. Here's a good read from Microsoft:

Hi there, I have installed Service Pack 2 on many computers and nevered had a problem. Since Service Pack 2 has been out a while, most companys have got their products fix so that it can run with Service Pack 2. Yes it would help things run better, it has a popup blocker for IE, it has a better firewall(its ok but would recommend another one to use). I hope that this helps.

SP2 is a terrific upgrade, and every user should have it. The early bugs for the most part have been worked out.

Installation problems now are mostly related to installing it on system that is infected with malware (spyware/virus/trojan). There are even some spyware infections that will prevent SP2 from restarting after installation. It's extremely important to have a clean system before installing.

Run a full system virus scan, and scan with Ad-aware and you should be okay to install. Have us check a Hijack This log if in doubt.

I have a Gateway laptop (P4) and I emailed Gateway asking about any issues with SP2 before I install it. I was really surprised when they told me NOT to install it because of all the problems people are having with it.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.
