Have read the read this pages before posting. Have taken all the necessary steps. I am currently running Norton Internet Security 2005, I ran Trend Micro House Call, both these programs detected and deleted (files still in quarantine) most of the files that were trojans and or spyware. The initial error message I received was from a program called SpySherrif. Most of the issues are resolved except for that my desktop is still being held prisoner. Now upon restarting my computer the black box that was appearing in the middle of my desktop which read that spyware has been detected, so system has been halted, is no longer there. The file init32.exe was/is the virus I have deleted Spy Sherrif form everywhere I can think of, Program Files, Start menu, and the add/remove programs in control panel. But still, when I restart I cannot take back control of my desktop. All my icons are still there, however when i am in control panel in display, i cannot change the wallpaper on the desktop, it will not allow me... I Downloaded Cleanup, Ad-aware, Ewido Security, an last but not least Trojan Hunter, each program found something else, this is unbelievable..... I then downloaded Hijack this and below you will see my log. Before I continue with your valued advice, should I delete Trojan Hunter I am already running Norton internet Security 2005?
Also when I run a live update using Norton Internet Security I get the following message..."LIVE UPDATE HAS DETECTED A POTENTIAL SECURITY

COMPROMISE ON YOUR COMPUTER: ONE OR MORE ENTRIES FOR SYMNATEC LIVE UPDATE SERVERS EXIST IN YOU WINDOW HOST FILES. A MALICIOUS ENTRY IN YOUR HOSTS FILES COULD PREVENT LIVEUPDATE FROM RETRIEVING UPDATES FOR YOUR SYMNATEC PRODUCTS, INCLUDING ANTI-VIRUS UPDATES. GENERALLY SYMANTEC LIVE UPDATE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT APPEAR IN YOUR WINDOWS HOSTS FILES."
I am not sure if this is at all related to my virus problem.

I thank you in advance for any advice or help you may give me. :tazz:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
O21 - SSODL: System - {386482B8-12BB-4783-9F92-D89DB6CD697F} - ssmc.dll (file missing)
===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Update Windows XP and IE to SP1 before we continue.

Regards,

Thank you so much for your reponse Pieter (Metallica). I have been waiting in an-ticipation... Here's what I did: Yesterday evening I ran CWshredder, it found about.blank and removed it. Upon reboot and running CWshredder again about.blank pops up again...so I removed it again. This must have removed the file you asked me to check and fix in Hijack this log, because it is no longer there:
021 - SSODL: System - {386482B8-12BB-4783-9F92-D89DB6CD697F} - ssmc.dl(file missing)

Below is my posts with new Hijack This log, Contents of smitfiles.txt log, Ewido Log(ran Ewido twice, 2 logs).

Had a little trouble with Panda... computer froze first time i ran it...froze on file c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll.... next time it worked fine..removed infected items...

I am currently running Windows XP w/ SP1A.

Still do not have control over wallpaper in my desktop... in display in control panel... internet explorer icon is present that says desktop. That has not disappeared... don't know if it should. Only thing I can do as far as wallpaper is change the color not the picture.

My computer is running really, really, really slow right now.. I think its becuase of all the programs i have dowloaded to try to clean up my computer.. please advise..
thanks again... look forward to hearing from you

Sorry this posting is so long... :tazz:

Much better. The only thing that doesn't add up is that your version of XP still says it wasn't updated.

Since you are almost completely clean anyway, it might be smarter to go straight to SP2

Let me know if you encounter any problems doing so.

Hi again. Thanks for the help. I dowloaded IE SP1 and tried to locate a version of SP1 for Windows XP.. unfortunately it is no longer available for download. I tried downloading SP2 but the Windows update website from Microsoft would not allow me until I downloaded an installed other updates. So I downloaded everything necessary so I am now up to date... and then SP2 for Windows XP. This took a very long time last night. I have not restarted my computer since installation of SP2. I wil do so later tonight. The other updates did not fix my problems. Where do I go from here? Let me know if I should post another log. Thanks once again.

Pieter,

Thank you for being so patient with me. My work schedule right now has me working long days and nights. I have restarted computer with Windows XP SP2 and IE SP1. Problem with desktop wallpaper is still present.

Below is my new Hijack This Log. If there are any other logs you need to see, let me know. My solace is my computer. Thank you for your time.

Can you check your version of smitREM ?

It was recently updated from version 2.3 to 2.4
You need to run the last one. Let me know when you did.
