I have noticed a lot of posts that ask for product keys for windows. I lost mine, having moved to 4 different states in 5 years. I found a site that sells Windows 98, that I think is legitimate. This was basically my last resort since the machine was older and can't really handle a newer O/S. So if you don't mind spending a bit then go to this site. Hope this helps anyone out.

Please let me know if anyone thinks this is not a legitimate purchase. I did talk to someone who thought the HP OEM ones shouldn't be touched. I really don't know.

Hi thekidd77...Welcome to G2G!

Is it that you have lost your product key, but still have your Win98 install cd or do you need a new cd with a product key?

If you have the cd, but lost your product key, it can be recovered from the registry if the machine is still running. If you no longer have the cd or product code, you will need to purchase a new one. Unless you are running an HP machine specific to the disk you mentioned, I wouldn't touch it. It is very difficult to tell just what is legit and what is not anymore, but THIS is the one I would pick from the site your link took me to.

Is your machine running? Is it an OEM machine...HP, Dell, Compaq? Do you have the original CD?

On win98se the product key is located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion {ProductKey}

To locate it goto Start > Run and type in REGEDIT. Click on the + and navigate to Windows then click on the folder of Current Version to reveal your Product Key.

You can also find it in the ms-dos mode, if you should be so unlucky as to have to reinstall because you can't get into Windows. If you're using a boot disk enter

C:\windows\command\find /n "ProductKey" C:\windows\sysstem.dat

if the C:\Windows\> prompt comes up just enter

find /n "ProductKey" system.dat
