[FoggyDays]

Below is my HIJACKTHIS log. Background: about 2 weeks ago I started being redirected to winantispyware.com frequently when using IE. To try and stop this problem I updated Windows, dumped cookies,etc. Ran Ad-aware and McAfee. Didn't help. I was directed to this forum by a friend and followed all the steps to try and resovle the problem myself. over the past 2 days I've installed and run clean-up, spybot, spyguard, spywareblaster. cwshredder, ie-spyad and trojan hunter. I thought at first these measures had fixed my problem but again today Ive been redirected to winantispyware.com which trys to download an application automatically- and also I've been redirected to winfixer.com. I'm so frustrated! I would SO appreciate some help-- thank you very much!!

I tried to post here last night but I must have done it wrong because I can't find my post on the forum. So here I go again. For a few weeks now I've been having popups/redirecting when in IE. The persistant one was winantispyware.com, always with an automatic "do you want to install and run this program" box. thank goodness I have automatic downloads disabled. The popups got worse and more varied -- I thought I simply needed to update my security settings and do windows update. Here's what I did before finding this forum on the advice of a friend:
ran ad-aware, macafee, updated windows, deleted temp files-history-cookies. Pop ups continued winfixer.com, amxtravel.com, matchservice.com, are a few that are paticularly persistent. Mostly I'm redirected however or hijacked. Since finding this forum I've followed all the steps to take before posting. Over the past 2 days I've installed and run the following programs: spybot, clean up, spyware guard, cwshredder, trojan hunter. I did trendmicro online virus scan, in addition to my installed macafee. NOTHING is helping!!!! I fear now that I'm infected with a virus or.....??? as I see this same topic frequently here on this forum. I'm at a complete loss what to do next and desperately need some advice! I tried to post here last night but I must have done it wrong because I can't find my post on the forum. So here I go again. For a few weeks now I've been having popups/redirecting when in IE. The persistant one was winantispyware.com, always with an automatic "do you want to install and run this program" box. thank goodness I have automatic downloads disabled. The popups got worse and more varied -- I thought I simply needed to update my security settings and do windows update. Here's what I did before finding this forum on the advice of a friend:
ran ad-aware, macafee, updated windows, deleted temp files-history-cookies. Pop ups continued winfixer.com, amxtravel.com, matchservice.com, are a few that are paticularly persistent. Mostly I'm redirected however or hijacked. Since finding this forum I've followed all the steps to take before posting. Over the past 2 days I've installed and run the following programs: spybot, clean up, spyware guard, cwshredder, trojan hunter. I did trendmicro online virus scan, in addition to my installed macafee. NOTHING is helping!!!! I fear now that I'm infected with a virus or.....??? as I see this same topic frequently here on this forum. I'm at a complete loss what to do next and desperately need some advice! Please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder.

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it will stand in the way of us cleaning up:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.
Reverse the process when you’ve carried out the advise.

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install Cleanup from here (Alternate site if the above is not working, go Here)

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

One question- and forgive me for perhaps sounding dense- but how do I move hijackthis from the desktop to a new folder or create a new folder? the folder should NOT be on the desktop after I've moved it? where should it go? You don't sound dense to me. You sound smart. Smart people ask for an explanation when they don't know how to do something.

Just deleted the entire folder and follow this lead.

Please download the latest version of Hijack This. Click here to download the latest version (1.99.1). Please save it in a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT). This is to ensure that backups are saved and accessible in the event you should need it. Follow the instructions below if you are unsure how to save it in a permanent folder:
1.) Click on the link to download HijackThis.exe.
2.) When it pulls up the box (for you to pick a location to save the file), click on the pulldown menu and select "[C:]".
3.) Click on the button to "create new folder" and name the folder HijackThis
4.) Double click on the folder you just made (to go into the folder) and click "save" on the bottom of the box.

I followed your instructions very closely. I encountered a few issues/problems:

When running the vundoFix- I got a pop up warning from mcafee about unsafe scripting. I clicked "allow scripts to run" and the fix seemed to progress properly. However when I got to the point of the "blue screen of death" my computer never rebooted. (I waited about 20+ mins before manually forcing it to close down.) I rebooted manually.

In the next step when I ran HijackThis, one item was not on the report to check for fixing:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddaxv.dll

The other items I checked and fixed, as instructed.

In the last step to use ACTIVESCAN, I was unable to make the scan run on my machine- I'm not sure why. I was able to download the file and go through all the steps up to where you chose what you want to scan. I clicked on "My Computer" and nothing happened. I tried 3 or 4 times to run it. I enabled cookies, changed my security setting in IE to "prompt" for safe activeX scripting, and turned off pop up controls... it never ran.

Because of this I only have a hijackthis log to post below.... if there is something I can do, tinker with some other settings that I did not think of- in order to run the ACTIVE SCAN, please give me detailed instructions.

You need to allow the popup from Panda. Guess you already did that.

Sometimes the cause is because of missing visual basic runtime files. Installing them can solve the problem, because those are also needed for ActiveX:
Go here to download a selfextracting file that may solve the problem.

Hello!

Ok, I have a couple of questions:

I disabled McAfee then conected to Panda- and this time around I get an error message when it checks to make sure that you have the most updated components. (I was able to get beyond this step last night) The error reads:

Error downloading Active Scan. Possible causes are:
--not allowing the application of Active X control to be downloaded
-- the error could be due to a download error or an installation error.


........so I checked my security settings and clicked "enable" for 2 different activeX choices, only leaving disable checked in front of the choice that was marked 'unsigned'. Went back to Panda and it still won't work. I'm perplexed!

Next..... I connected to the link for the runtime update. However, I don't understand the installation instructions: (I've copied and pasted below)

Instructions
Before starting the download, create a download directory on your computer.


Click the link to begin downloading. When prompted by the download software, choose the option Save this program to disk and click OK. Then select the directory you created on your computer.


Run the file from the download directory. When prompted, select the same directory you created on your computer. You will be expanding the contents of the EXE into this directory.

What does it mean to create a download directory? Is this the same as creating a folder as you instructed me to do yesterday when downloading a new copy of hijackthis? Will the folder or directory be on the desktop when I'm done or is it acessed via My computer?
then-- to "run the file from the download directory"-- does that mean after the download is complete to not follow the automatic installation instructions, but to close everything down and go into "my computer" manually and find the file?

One more thing to note-- with all the tinkering I've done to my machine in the past few days-- when making those changes to the active X settings I received a Dell pop up stating that my computer is at risk due to low IE settings. I thought I had reset everything but now I'm worried because I must have missed something. What if anything, should I be doing now to correct this problem?

Ugh...... another problem.

Trying to figure out what's up with my settings. I was looking at Spybot settings to make sure it was enabled again properly. There was a BHO listed without any explanation.... meaning all the adjoining fields explaining what it is, were blank. I "unchecked" it. Then ran tried to run a scan.... I don't know if these are related, but I got a continous pop-up with this message:

Deny was greyed out. Info said "no additional info available."
I simply tried to close the box..... and it kept poping up over and over again... along witha smaller box that poped up in the lower right of my desktop saying "user denied registry change"

But I couldn't cycle out of it-- I had to finally use Cntl+Alt+Del to close the program.

What is this?? this is so frustrating! I'm afraid to do anything on my computer.......

Oh one more thing... I've noticed since last night that when I get these pop up boxes the info looks somewhat scrambled.... overlapping, like scrunched together. I tried making the windows bigger but it doesn't help. In the example above the boxes which you would click to allow a change or deny, etc.. were only partially viewable. Partially obscured by other writing.

First of, the BHO warning is about Spybot SD Helper. It's legit (it's the helper from Spybot itself), that's why you cannot deny it in that window.

As to you IE settings.
Our expert Bobbi Flekman wrote a extensive tutorial on IE setting to make Internet Explorer safer. You can find the tutorial here.

Move to the part 'MANAGING ACTIVEX CONTROLS' to read more about settings for activex.

Let's first reset the setting to the way they were initially.
Open Internet Explorer.
Go to Tools >Internet Options> Tab advanced> press the button 'Restore Defaults'.

I changed IE settings to "default" as you instructed. I rebooted my computer, disabled McAfee and tried to run Panda ActiveScan again- this time it worked. It appears to have found a virus! Can you tell me what this is? I couldn't find it in the online dictionary on the activescan website.

Weldone, the one that was found by Panda belongs to that Vundo we worked on earlier. It didn't show in the HijackThis log because it was hidden behind the one we attacked.
Panda cleaned it out.
