Which kind of window do you mean? The one with a pop up box where the text/clickboxes are overlapping? (like in spybot?)

Or when I get redirected to winantipspyware or winfixer? After I installed SpyGuard, I was still getting redirected- but the page wasn't loading- and I just got the one page, instead of 5 or 6 to close- one after another. It just said
WINANTISPYWARE across the top of the page, but the page itself was blank.

*.r2.attbi.com belongs to comcast, I take it that's ok.
The shellmon belongs to AOL, so that's ok too.

Move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\

See if you can find any files with these names:
ddaxv
vxadd
vtspm
mpstv

Remove them, but let me know what you find too.

I didn't find any of those files. I both manually (visually) scanned for them,as well as using the search function. The only file I found that was somewhat similar was one entitled:

vxblock.dll


What about the window shot? Did you want me to forgo that for now? I didn't quite understand what you were looking for me to 'capture' in your previous request.

I haven't really been online except to deal with this buisness. I've been very nervous to surf as I usually do. So it sounds like I should give it a go for a day or so to be sure everything is back to normal?

You didn't really answer me about the screen shot- shall I asume you no longer want me to do that?

Can you explain what exactly I was infected with? I didn't really understand if it was backdoor application that was put onto the machine without my consent or a virus, or both?

You got infected by virtumonde (an Adware Trojan).

Sorry for the delay replying these past few days. I've been really sick. Anyway, my IE seems to be running fine now from the limlited surfing that Ive done. I'm still having the scrunched pop up boxes, like in spybot- I finally figured out how to capture the screen and paste it. Simply pushing Print screen wasn't working for me- but when I pushed a key labeled in blue FN ( inbetween Ctrl and Alt on the left hand side bottom of keyboard) in conjunction with PrintScreen, I was able to capture it.
I'll send it to you next-- I saved it as a .jpg, in Paint.

Please put a check to 'remember this decision' and press the 'allow this change' button right above that.
Spybot detects a change to be made. It will ask you if you want this change to take place. By putting a check to it, you add it to your white list, an 'always allow' list.

Now, what did you just allow:
It's a process associated with the AOL Computer Check-Up application. It can can find and fix common AOL and computing issues.

Every change Spybot prompts you to, you really need to stop and think. Is this something you really want. Allowing a bad process will get you in a lot of trouble.

As for the scrunched image. I guess it an issue for Spybot. I also have that image, so do a whole lot of people I know.

I could use a good tutorial regarding spybot- I don't know how to tell what certain items are and what to do with them. They are always marked in red, but I'm not comfortable blindly clicking "fix" The info box doesn't really give enough info for your average user to make an intelligent decision.

One issue I am having (which I know is not malware related) is since I implemented such restrictive security settings as a result of this experience, my kids online games will not load or play properly. I don't know how to fix that. I suspect it has something to do with the active X settings, but if I change them back to how they were before, doesn't that put my computer at risk again?

Looks like I am NOT clean after all

I ran a panda activescan this afternoon and it found both spyware and a virus- even though I've been being super cautious about my activities on the Internet! Plus I have enhanced software and security settings now....... so what gives? How could this have happened again so quickly? Or was it possibly not cleaned up properly the first time? Ugh...... Panda finds two entries in your System Restore point. The tips will tell you how to create a new point without these infected entries.

Let's first cleanup and then reset the settings for Internet Explorer.

To clean up your Internet Explorer, clear the History, Temporary Internet Files, and your Cookies by perform the following steps:

• Click Tools.
  The Internet Options window appears.
• Under the General tab, click Delete Cookies.
  The Delete Cookies window appears.
• Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder? appears.
• Click OK.
  This may take several minutes to complete.
• After deleting the cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder, click Delete Files.
  The Delete Files window appears.
• Click Ok to Delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files Folder?.
  This may take several minutes to complete.
• Click Clear History.
  A new Internet Options window appears.
• When asked Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?, click Yes.
  This may take several minutes to complete.

To reset your Internet Explorer settings, complete the following steps:

• Under the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings.
  The Reset Web Settings window appears.
• Click to remove the checkmark from the box titled Also reset my home page.
• Click Yes.
  Once complete, the Reset Web Setting window appears.
• Click Ok to complete the resetting process.
• Click Ok to close out the Internet Options window.

Close out your current Internet page, and open a new one by double clicking the Internet Explorer icon.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
