My computer has been moving slow. So I removed J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Updates 1 and 2 but I kept Update 4 on my computer. Afterwards, when I surfed the internet and clicked on links within different sites, I would get an hour glass and the screen would just freeze. I removed the J2SE Update 4 and reinstalled Java. Java was reinstalled with only Update 4. The screens are still freezing and it's getting worse. I have to constantly do CTRL+ALT+DEL to end the task and go back into the internet. Is this a Java problem or Internet Explorer Problem or Spyware Problem? Please advise. Thanks

Hello,

I uninstalled Java but when I went to the Java website, it doesn't give me the option to download version 1.42, only version 1.5. Plus I need the newest version (1.5) for another program I'm using. What should I do?

Also, I did download Adware, Spybot and Ewido. How do I run Spybot and Ewido in "Safe Mode?" When I did run Spybot and I tried to download the updates for Detection Rules, English Descriptions, English Language, and Immunization database, I received "bad checksum" listed under info and it didn't update these specific categories. Spybot did detect something called "Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisableNotify." Is it safe to remove this?

When I ran Ewido, I received this message: The file "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\Cdacache\00\00\0F.dat/files\wtvh.dll" cannot be removed because it is embedded in the archive "C:\Documents and Settings\Ownder\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\Cdacache\00\00\0F.dat." Do you want to remove the whole archive? Is this something that I should removed?

Please advise me on these situations. Thank you so much for your help.

I just wanted to let you know that my computer still gets stuck even though I uninstalled Java. When I start clicking around I'll get an hour glass and it will stay stuck on the hour glass until I do CTRL+ALT+DEL to end the task.

FYI--I went back to try to download Java because I need it to work in the morning and now I can't get it to download. My system just freezes. Please help!

Yes, delete the whole archive and this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ownder\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\

I guess you'll have to stick with Java 1.5 then. 1.42 is listed on the site, you just have to look for it.

For Spybot, try searching for the downloads on another location. Run Spybot and click on the updates button. On the top buttons, choose another location like Safer Networking #1 (Europe) or something like that. Then try Search for updates again. Yes, fix that in Spybot.

What's wrong with Ewido? It should run in Safe Mode.

Okay. I deleted the archive that Ewido found. There's nothing wrong with Ewido. I definitely need Java 1.5 version for another program I use. Do I reboot in safe mode and then run Adware, Spybot, and Ewido again before proceeding to uninstalling items on the list?

Also, I did fix the Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisableNotify in Spybot.


Once I restart my computer, do I unistall the items listed under Viewpoint (items R1 through 016?) I know very little about computers and I want to make sure that I'm doing this correctly.

You may run Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido again if you wish in Safe Mode, but I don't think it's required if you ran them earlier already.

Try fixing Viewpoint and the other entries for HijackThis in Safe Mode. Don't fix ALL the items from R1 to O16. ONLY fix the couple of entries I mentioned to fix which is the 3 R1's, one N3, one O4, and one O16 entry.

I got a message that my hijackthis is located in a temporary folder. I don't know how to move it to a different folder. Also, now when I click on MS Word it gets stuck and won't open. My whole system lock up and I can't shut it down, not even with the CTRL+ALT+DEL. I think I may have a virus or something. Help!!!

I'm really having a hard time here. I can't run my Norton Antivirus at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. Yet, when I double click on the icon on my desktop, it begins to open the window for it and then it gets stuck. The same thing is happening to my Microsoft Word. Could I possibly have a virus or did I uninstall something that I shouldn't have (like the J2SE for example)? Should I restore my system back to the date prior to removing the J2SE, or does this sound more like a virus? Please help! Thanks!!

I removed the extra items you mentioned. My problem isn't the system moving slow. When I initially posted, I was giving background information of what I removed due to the system moving slow and as a result my computer is freezing up on me. Perhaps I didn't explain it well enough. Anyhow, my computer is getting worse and I can't open MS Word or Norton Antivirus without my computer freezing up. Therefore, I'm just going to take it in to the shop for repair. Thank you for your help.

I know you said you were going to take (probably took it already) to the repair shop, but I think Norton may be the problem here. It seems to cause problems on a majority of users I see here....

Thank you for reopening this for me again. Okay, I removed Norton antivirus and I have downloaded Free AVG antivirus and the free Zone Alarm Firewall.

My system is still freezing but it's not as often. By freezing, I mean, if I click on a link the hour glass appears and never disappears. When this happens, I do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and the Task Manager states that the system isn't responding. What could be the problem? Where do I go from here?
