I have tried everything and even read posts from here...but I'm afraid to do anything because it seems like each person has to type in something completely different while removing the spyware. I'm not sure what I need to do. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I'm running Windows XP. I already downloaded the Hijack This program but haven't used it. Thank You

Please create a permanent folder for HijackThis (I suggest C:\HJT or C:\HijackThis) and move the HijackThis program there. HijackThis will create a number of backup files which may be lost, along with HijackThis, if left in a temporary folder.

To create a permanent folder: Click My Computer, then C:\. In the menu bar, File->New->Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Always make sure you run HijackThis from the permanent folder.

Just use your computer as you would normally do, don't add any new software on you computer just yet (except for windows updates, and antivirus updates). Just hang in their and sit tight for my response. You do have spyware on your computer and I want to look at a solution to your spyware problem and post back to you. So again, just hang in there.

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start -> All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Double-click on My Computer and locate the file "palstart.exe" (this should be located in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup directory). Right-click on it and choose "Properties", then click on the "Version" tab at the top. Click on "Comments", "Company", "File Version", and "Internal Name" and please post whatever the text in the box immediately to the right says for each, in a reply to this post.

In the Startup folder...when I clicked on what you asked...there was no Company, File Version, Internal Name, etc etc... so I went to Program Files and found the Paltalk.exe program in there. Paltalk is a chat program that I sometimes use. So I got the stuff you needed from the Program Files folder where Paltalk was located.

If you uninstalled paltalk you need to remove the next file/files also:

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer in normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps.

thank you for all your help. I am about to do what you just said. Will I have to uninstall Paltalk by doing this? I use that program for chatting every so often. Does Paltalk have spyware? Is there a way to Keep Paltalk and just remove the spyware from it? Thanks!

Dear phildds,

The paltalk application is an optional fix. The paltalk application may not contain spyware itself but may be a vehicle for spyware to get on to your computer. If you do want to get rid of paltalk, uninstall the application. If you want to keep paltalk then don't uninstall it. Since this is an optional fix, it is your choice if you want to uninstall paltalk or not. Again this is your decision, if you need the application, then don't uninstall it.

In addition, tell me in detail if you are you still getting the VIPFARES popups.

As of yet...I haven't gotten the VIPFARES popup since I did your fix! Thank you so much!! I didn't delete Paltalk because I use it very often...but would love to remove the spyware it may bring my computer. What do you recommend I do once a week to remove spyware on my computer?
