Hi guys, I wan't sure if this should go in the Software Category or Windows XP. I chose this one.

I am currently running the following:

P4 2500mgHz with 512 RAM
160 GIG hard drive partitioned By Acronis for image purposes
CD/DVD ROM
CD/DVD Burner (2X)
============================================

Software:

Windows Xp Home SP2 (Fully updated)
Kaspersky AV Personal 5.0 (Real time monitoring)
Zone Alarm Free
Pest Patrol
Ewido (No Guard)
Ad-Aware
Spybot
A squared (Free)

=============================================

Up until this problem occurred I was using Nero BackitUp to DVD R/W doing incremental backups without problems overnight.

Every morning, I checked and the Inc backup appeared as having been done.

I then ckecked, after stepson left, and noticed that inc backups were not necessarily on DVD. I proceeded to make a new Full backup. That is where I noticed the problem for real.

The software, would copy/compress the chosen files and verify the integrity of the backup to be made. No problem. When the burn process started, it would stop after about 60 MB and freeze. I could not end the procedure either through the software or through Task Manager and each attempt required a manual shutdown. (Boy did my system love that).

I then trial copy of NovaStor and that wouldn't burn either.

I then purchased a copy of Roxio's BackupMyPC that didn't even make it to the burn stage, stating that it was looking for "busy files". This couls last for 45 minutes before I manually shut down the system due to it freezing.

I bit the bullet, and replaced my system with the image taken 6 weks prior just after installing Kaspersky. I had been using Bit Defender before.

The same problem is occurring.

Around the same time as I switched to Kaspersky, I started to use a USB 2.0 125Mb Flash drive for portable Malware Removal purposes. Plug-N-Play wouldn't recognize it but "stepson" Googled and found an article describing the problem which required a minor registry tweak which he was nice enough to make without asking. The drive subsequently worked. He no longer remembers what he changed.

So currently I am without backup capabilities and must rely on copying ClipMate daily backups to CD manually (Program I use to store users URLs and Canned Speeches"

The only changes that I can remember that were made are:

1. Change from Bit Defender to Kaspersky
2. Addition of Flash Drive

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated

You may have left out the most critical piece of info--cd/dvd burner drive model and make, or more specifically, is this an external drive?

The only way this makes sense is if this is an external usb drive

The internal drives are as follows:

1. Toshiba DVD-ROM DS-R5002
2. Toshiba ODD-DVD SD- M1802

The external Flash 125MB pen drive is from Shikatronics

Paste the Nero BackItUP log-file of a failed burn, in you next post.
It can be found at the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\LOCAL Settings\Temp\NeroBackItUp.txt

I have upgraded Nero to 6.6.016 and am now able to burn to both CD and DVD in backups but the R/W medium remains a no go.

It now closes on its own so no more need to reboot manually to "unfreeze" the system.

Last attempt on a CD- R/W backup did not bear fruit but provided the 3 following mesages:

a. Command Sequence Error

b. Invalid Write State Toshiba DVD-ROM R5002/H3T0

c. Could not perform End Task

I hope this helps a bit. Thanks,

First, lets try updating the wnaspi32.dll file to the latest version.
It has to be replaced in two places, one in the system32 folder and another in the Nero-installtion folder (C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero).
Pls. rename the wnaspi32.dll in these folders to wnaspi32.old or copy them to different folders, just to keep a backup

For the one in the Nero folder:
Download the wnaspi32.dll file from Nero's site:
www.nero.com/en/WNASPI32.DLL.html
and copy it to the C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero.

For the one in the system32 folder
Download the wnaspi32.dll from the followning link:
http://www.adaptec.c...=aspi_471a2.exe.
Read the installtion instructions carefully on that page.

I located wnaspi32.dll int the Program Files\Ahead\Nero folder and downloaded the replacement file from Ahead. No further action has been taken at this time.

I have downloaded the file aspi-471a2.exe from the site you provided and located the wnaspi32.dll in the sys32 folder.

The installation directions ask you to look for a C:\Adaptec folder in your system or find where you move it to. An extensive search of my system, does notreveal the existence of any such a folder on my machine. Can a blank folder be created to satisfy these requirements?

Thanks,

aspi-471a2.exe is Winzip Self-extracting file.
Just open it (aspi-471a2.exe) and click the Unzip button, it will create the c:\adaptec folder by default, unless you change the path of the destination.

Goto c:\adaptec and run install.bat.
Dont try replacing the wnaspi32.dll (for the system32 folder) manually; let install.bat do it.

1. Both dll's were renamed and replaced with suggested ones.

2. Notes: dll in Nero folder was current one but I still changed it
auto install of dll for system32 folder froze system and required manual reboot. New Dll is present in sys32 folder.

3. Any more steps before trying it out?

Just read an article by Keith in other Forum. Maybe I'm wasting my time fiddling around with rewritable media for backup purposes?

Thanks,

Trevuren

Theres nothing wrong with using R\W media.
But, yes over a course of time or after a number of burn\erase sessions, the R\W media needs to be replaced, because the silver-alloy dye of the recording layer wears out.
I personally never had any probelms with R\W media, though I dont backup that frequently. I only had to replace mine due to physical damage.

The old version of wnaspi32.dll was the only thing I could find wrong with your log. The NERO one must have been updated after you upgraded your Nero to 6.6.016.
So go ahead and try a burn session.
Best of luck! :tazz:

After more fooling around, it appears that that the problem may not be with Nero but rather with an ancient DVD Burner.
