I think I have a spy ware infection but I'm not sure! I keep getting pop up ads from Winfixer, WinAntiSpyware, VIPFares, and Traffic Explorer!!

Also I keep getting a system message stating the lsass shell is missing and the system will be shut down. Then the computer shuts off.

I use Spy Sweeper software by Webroot and it indicates the system is clean. I alos downloaded the Vundo fix A and Vundo Fix B as well as the Sasser E removal from Symantec and again they all indicated the system is clean. The pop ups continue.

Hello Excal!

I'm glad to know I'm not imagining things! I followed the link u gave me and downloaded what I hope is the correct service pack. Once I downloaded the initial critical updates it prompted me for SP2 and told it no. I'll go back and get that when u tell me its safe.

I hope I downloaded the correct SP since they were not labeled as such. The were labeled in numbers like Critical update KB12345 etc. So I was a little confused.

Here is the latest hijackthis log. If i need to go and download something else I will. I'm new at computer ownership and didn't know such things as service packs existed. I'll be more careful in the future. I want this spy ware stuff gone! Ugh, why do people create stuff like this?

• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi!

Ok I followed your instructions. I did not get blue screen of death however, I did receive an error notice when vundofix attempted to open the hijackthis program. It said something about hijackthis wasn't available. Hijackthis is saved in program files and on the desktop. I clicked ok and then hijackthis started up. Not sure what was going on there.

If you use Windows XP, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\asdf.exe
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

How can I ensure that do not get reinfected with this vundo thingy since Spy Sweeper did not detect it?

Keep all you anti virus/spyware and windows up to date. Run them frequently. Stay away from sites you don't know are safe. Don't open any attachements from people unless u know 100% that they are safe.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot
