Hi--
I have been trying to fix this problem for a few days...When I connect to the internet (broadband), the Sign-on page for AIm pops up, but then I cannot close it--It keeps coming back, even if I do not sign in (and I have not signed in for the past few days because I suspect that something is infecting the AIM). Once it keeps popping up, I cannot do anything else on the computer. Thanks for your help! Here is the Hijackthis logfile.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimt.../aimtoolbar.jsp
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5B993E8C-29F7-4624-A81E-B436683FA1F0} - C:\WINDOWS\CDM\rtykraqytj.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6933A88C-52F7-A184-7E78-2EE140D293B4} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {44BE0690-5429-47f0-85BB-3FFD8020233E} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZUxdm080YYUS

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\CDM\

Restart and run BOTH these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi again and sorry for the trouble!

I could delete C:\windows\cdm\ from safe mode, but then in "regular" mode, it said "file is inaccessible and may have been moved," and then it said this in safe mode (the second time I checked for it) Is this a problem??? When I log into AIM, my cursor still shows both the "hourglass" and the arrow...and the Buddy list window cannot be closed--it jsut keeps popping back up and then when I try to run other programs, they either do not open or are slow to open. That's what was happening before all of this started, and then I couldn't close the window...I was able to close the AIM buddy window this time though, so maybe it's less of a problem than I thought... Is "AIm Fix" a scam or for real?? There are some "no name" keys that are still in the hijackthis log...you'll see those--again, thanks! The following was in safe mode just now and below that was the log from a couple of hours ago...Again, sorry for the continued trouble and thank you.

For that file inaccessible message, is that referring to the missing CDM folder?

Yes, AIM Fix is said to remove known AIM viruses. Take a look here.

If for any reason those O2 entries are not showing up in Safe Mode, I want you to fix them in Normal Mode then:

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

SurfSideKick
Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
O4 - Startup: Epson printer Registration.lnk = D:\Titles\EpsonReg\EpsonReg.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Post-it® Software Notes Lite.lnk = C:\Program Files\3M\PSNLite\PsnLite.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\

I want you to run an Ewido scan now and save the log when done.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here along with the Ewido log.

OK, when you are done, also give me this log...I'll see if that CDM file is still listed in one of the windows files.

Download StartDreck http://www.greyknigh.../StartDreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'mark all'

Uncheck the following boxes only:
System/Running Process -> List Modules
System/Drivers -> NT Services
System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers
Press 'OK'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\ and double click on wininit.ini to open it. Delete these NUL lines in it:

`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=

`NUL=

Save the file and close it.

Restart and see if that CMD error message still comes up. If it does, we might have to search for it in the registry to make sure it's not causing the problem in there.

Hi yet again!

I deleted the NUL lines from "wininit" in Normal mode..should I do it in safe mode too? AIM is opening, but the "hourglass" sign is remaining, so I can't do other things while it is open...maybe the problem is in the registry...thanks--here's today's hijackthis log:

Nothing wrong. Try uninstalling AIM. Restart and make sure all the folders for it (like C:\Program Files\AIM\) is deleted already. Reinstall AIM.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
