Hello all,
I am posting in the hopes you guys and gals can help me (obviously).
Hopefully I am not giving to mch information but I am hoping I can help
you folks help me :tazz:
I have registered and read the forum rules. I have followed the directions
given on the page ...You-Must-Read-This-Before-Posting-A-Hijackthis-Log-t2852.html .
I have gotten a malware infection and it has been highly educational attempting
to fix the problem (I've had only partial success). I recently had a houseguest
who used my computer to check out some pr0n sites. The infection occured
directly after they left. I believe they may have downloaded a "ostensible
wmplayer codec" to try to play some [bleep] vids.
The infection in question has changed my IE homepage to http://www.security2k.net/
and cannot be changed back. I almost always use Firefox Mozilla for surfing.
Additionally I get the "windows security icon" in the lower right portion of my
toolbar. This was happening every few seconds until I ran the combination of
programs suggested by your admin folks (MANY MANY THANKS!!!). Now it appears
only occasionally, but the windows redirection and homepage changes have not
stopped. Additionally when I attempt to run the Activescan from Panda it
downloads the ActiveX control but then *diverts* to the http://www.security2k.net/
page. Perhaps this is critical information?
I have always run Ad-Aware but got the latest version via download as suggested.
Neither Ad-Aware nor CW-Shredder seem to find much, nor did deleting what they
found help the problem at all.
I DLed both Spybot S&D and the DSO Exploit Fix. This found a whole bevy of
stuff and very nicely asked permission to delete some of the offenders and run
upon my next restart. Done and Done.. and this seems to have helped the
problem with popups and fake security messages immensely.
I am presently running the latest version of McAfee. If I should switch to another
anti-virus program please advise. I am running XP with a residential LAN
connection via my college.
I also followed the generic instructions found at http://castlecops.co...23-psguard.html in an attempt to fix my problem.
I used Killbox to delete a series of suggested files. Again this did not apparently
help, only Spybot S&D has had a positive effect.
My Hijack This log follows, thanks for any assistance you folks can provide...

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Delete the files -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpC199.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Tampabelle,
Thanks for the assistance. I have had mixed success in following your instructions.
I could not find a file named "...\system32\hpC199.tmp". I did locate "...\system32\nvctrl.exe" and deleted it. Additionally Panda-Active Scan keeps
freezing.. usually while scanning files connected with the folder "Internet Explorer/explorer.exe".

the requested logs follow, I'm sorry it took me several days to reply but I was
trying to make the instructions work so as not to waste your time. Thanks.

Brian

Hi Brian,

If something doesnt work, you should let me know. I can probably find a work around for that that!!

Anyway, your logs look fine.

Do you have any issues with your PC ???

If not then we can fine tune your PC.

Let us clean up your PC a little bit.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

smitrem.exe
smitrem folder

Uninstall Ewido as it is a trial product and the trial period will expire shortly. Conflicts can arise between multiple anti-virus programs and can severely hamper the performance of the PC.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

This will not delete the programs from your PC. This will only disable the programs from running at Start up and result in a faster PC. You can always run the programs manually by using the respective exe files or the shortcuts.

After this, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get all the updates and patches and install them on your PC.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log.
