Hi I have a problem with my hp laptop, I seem to be infected with some sort of spyware. The pc takes an age to bootup, rarly shutsdown properly, pops up ads (Newker) and often freezes..

Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

We will use this program later.


THE FIX


Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

9. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

10. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\Media Gateway

11. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\svub.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gb5c36n8.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe


12. Run the program CleanUp!

13. Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\m?hta.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt


Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here along with a new HiJackThis log.

14. Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile2.bat on your Desktop.

15. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

16. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, files.txt, files2.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Im upto point 13 (still in safe mode) and Im having trouble opening notepad, im getting this message:

c:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe

Thgis application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.

Im on another pc and still have the laptop in safe mode..

Unfortunatly im still getting the same message, windows looks all strange aswell. For instance there is no START button, I have to raise the menu by pressing the window key.

Trying to open quite a few things gives me the same message. :tazz:

hit ctrl/alt/delete. in task manager, go to file, then to new task (run), then to browse. Find xp_exe_fix.reg and open . Allow it to merge with registry.

I'm also getting the following message whenh trying anything in admin tools:

MMC Failed to initialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll is registerd by running "regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll"

Ok still no task manager but i've opened Hijack this and ran process manager. I tried to run the program from there but im getting this message..

Ok, ive managed to get it all back. I repaired xp using the disk that came with this laptop (xp home). There were a few files windows was unable to copy, hopefully this wont cause too many problems as chances are they are bad files. athe only reason I can think of things getting messed up is I think th msconfig was in diagnostic mode but no sure.. :)

So anyway can we start again? The pop ups are still here and its painfully slow booting up etc. :tazz:
