Hi adena, Welcome to the forum.

C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\CONTENT.IE5\8JLVY2JT\HIJACKTHIS[1].EXE
Your running Hijackthis from a temp.
Create a new folder, for instance C:\AntiSpyware
Download the exe from here to that new folder.
http://www.merijn.or.../HijackThis.exe
This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong
Make and post a new log

Hi, Thanks

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subrat...e=post&id=43811
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {9EF4ABC6-0AEF-BF39-F38B-F5E3F1A7F58F} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MNTP] scanSYS.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsNetHelper] AliceSD.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [borlandg] control64.exe

there will be one maybe two items that look like >>
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmcup.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System\dmcup.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pcbac.exe] pcbac.exe
dmcup and pcbac.exe are random named file's and are usualy not visible, they need to be fixed,
BUT if you have any doubt dont fix anything.
Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks,

I was only able to find and remove one (R3) of the items you mentioned. The others were different enough that I did not remove them.

HI

My homepage has returned to normal!

The ipd file is what I ended up with when I ran the suspicious file packer program.

The only other problem I seem to have is when I go to run my Norton speed disk program it says there are missing files and it does not let me finish running the program. Other than that everything seems back to normal.

How would you describe what happened to my computer? Did I pick up a "malware program" or a Trojan, etc.?

Perhaps you used the wrong program, SPF is the third on that webpage, not the second as i thought.
Try again please
It will create a "requested-files[2005-09-22_08_35].cab" on your desktop.

That crappware is usualy picked up by visiting unsavory websites. If you use a modem check your phone bill for unwanted charges.

If norton is acting odd redownlod(latest version) and install again or better yet move to another freeware program, AVGfree, avast or antivir, dont install more than one.
